BAHAWALPUR:

A woman was axed to death by her husband on Wednesday.

He was arrested shortly after the murder, when he was trying to flee.

Tabassum Shaheed area police quoted the woman’s family as saying that their daughter, Ambreen Bibi, 22, had married Altaf Ahmad Abbasi, a resident of Chak 88-A near Liaqatpur, a month ago.

They said one week into the marriage, Abbasi started beating her. They said they had tried to intervene, but he would threaten to divorce her.

On Wednesday, they said, the couple had an argument and he attacked her with an axe, killing her on the spot. When Abbasi was trying to flee, some neighbours, who had gathered outside their house after hearing Ambreen Bibi scream for help, caught him. They then went in and found her lying in a pool of blood.

They tied Abbasi to a tree and informed the police and her parents.

Police arrived several hours later and arrested Abbasi. The axe, found on the crime scene was also seized.

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination before it was handed over to the parents.
