Punjab’s top law officer has urged the government to increase prosecutors’ salaries and provide them with requisite facilities to improve overall performance.

“I propose that the salaries of prosecutors be brought on par with those of High Court employees,” said Punjab’s Prosecutor General Sadaqat Ali Khan.

He was speaking at the launching of a refresher course on “Role of law officers vis-a-vis quick disposal of criminal cases” for prosecutors at the Federal Judicial Academy here on Monday, according to a press release issued by the academy.

Twenty-one law officers from across Pakistan including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, are participating in the week-long course. “It is lamentable that the role of prosecutors in our criminal justice system is akin to the role of a postman. In countries where prosecutors are provided with necessary facilities, conviction rates are much higher.
