KARACHI: Putting behind their abysmal show at the ICC Champions Trophy, Pakistan embarked on the Caribbean tour yesterday in pursuit of redemption against the West Indies in the limited-overs series that begins from July 14.

Pakistan will play five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20s against the hosts.

It will be their first assignment after the catastrophe in England that saw the side finish without a win, resulting in the ouster of various senior players. However, Misbahul Haq said the  side is desperate to turn the tide.

“We’re targeting a series win,” said the captain ahead of the team’s departure. “The team is balanced and if we play to our potential, we have a very good chance of achieving winning. Each member of the team will give his best and is desperate to perform.”

The captain warned the batsmen will have to improve if they are to achieve any success on the tour.

“Both bowlers and the batsmen will have to fire. West Indies are a good side in the limited-over formats and it’s a challenge that will need a combined effort. We have a good bowling line-up with a good mix of fast and spin bowlers. But we’ll need support from the batting department.”

Ajmal aims for contribution

Unlike in England, conditions in the West Indies are expected to favour Pakistan’s number one spinner Saeed Ajmal, who is aiming to play a crucial role.

“I did not take a break after the Champions Trophy,” Ajmal told The Express Tribune. “I continued training to be ready for the tour. I always look to do the best for my country. I feel that a good performance is due on my part now. A return to number one in the bowlers’ rankings is also in sights.

“However, this series is another tough task for the team as the West Indies are improving with each passing day.”

Afridi vows to shine

While Misbah shunned media, all-rounder Shahid Afridi spoke at the airport promising his best efforts to justify his selection.

“I am back because of the support of the fans and I will not let them down,” he said. “I am looking to make a successful comeback and will give my best to help my team win.

“It’s a tough tour but we can earn good results if everyone contributes.”

Strict security measures were made for the team’s departure as players were escorted by a protocol from the hotel to the airport.
