Kiran, who held the previous national record as well, was pleased with her effort, adding that being snubbed for last year’s London Olympics provided the extra motivation.
“The new national record is an answer to people who snubbed me for the Olympics,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “I’ll want to silence people through my performance. It was a challenge for me to improve on my own record and I’m proud of my achievement because it wasn’t easy to compete against players who are fresh while I’ve been appearing in every competition.”
The swimmer also broke the national record at the 50-metre (m) freestyle event, previously held by Rubab Raza (29.01), by recording a time of 28.98 seconds.
Army continue to lead medals table
On the field, Army’s domination continued as their medal tally swelled over the century mark with Mehnaz Bibi winning the 5000m race and Mohammad Jaffar winning the men’s pole vault competition after recording a distance of 4.7m.
In badminton, Army women’s team clinched first position followed by Punjab and Islamabad. In the men’s event, Sindh won gold, while Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad took silver and bronze medals respectively.
Army also won a gold medal in the rugby event after prevailing over K-P 21-12 in the final.
