7,000 tons of sugar arrives

KARACHI: Fresh supplies of sugar, imported by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP), arrived in the country on Thursday.

According to a press release issued by the TCP, shipments of 47,500 tons of the sweetener have either arrived at the Karachi Port or are expected to arrive within next week.

The release said MV Unicorn-1, carrying 7,000 tons of sugar had berthed at the port and started discharging sugar on Tuesday. TCP public relations officer Khizar Hayat said, “two more ships, MV Indian Fortune, carrying 20,000 tons, and MV Cape York, with 20,500 tons, are scheduled to arrive on October 2 and October 6, respectively.

“TCP currently has a stock of about 215,000 tons,” said Hayat, adding “after these arrivals have been discharged from the port and deposited in TCP facilities, (after which) the corporation’s stocks will stand at 262,500 tons.”

The corporation intends to sell 50,000 tons of sugar in the open market through two auctions.

Bids between 50 and 500 tons have already been invited and the results of these auctions will be announced on October 4 and 7.
