JAMRUD:

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was marked on Wednesday by the Frontier Corps (FC) and political administration by burning drugs and contraband at Shahkas Fort in Jamrud, Khyber Agency.

Inspector General Frontier Corps (IGCF) Ghayur Mehmood, who torched the drugs, told journalists 33,180 kilogrammes of hashish, 891 kilogrammes of heroin, 135 litres of acid and liquor, 1,345 kilogrammes of sulphur and 295 kilogrammes of opium were destroyed. Mehmood added the drugs were seized in 2012-13 and were worth Rs8 billion in the local market.

The IGFC said drugs worth Rs6 billion were captured by the FC, while the remaining banned substances, worth Rs2 billion, were seized by the political administration of Khyber Agency. Mehmood added authorities had thwarted hundreds of drug-related incidents despite threats of militancy and other issues faced by FC personnel.

“Although traffickers transporting drugs in small amounts sometimes succeed, we have seized most of their supplies,” he claimed. “We have decided to continue the campaign against drugs and other contraband with greater devotion, so the area may be freed of their influence and health activities can be promoted in the agency.”
