Abusing power?: SHC orders inquiry against PPP-supported Bijaranis

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has appointed Larkana police’s deputy inspector general as the inquiry officer on Tuesday to investigate allegations against provincial minister Mir Azad Khan Bijarani and his son, MNA Mir Shabbir Ali Bijarani, of burning political rivals’ houses.
Meanwhile, the police were also directed not to take illegal action against the petitioners who are supporters of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F). Headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh, the bench issued the order based on two identical petitions filed against the Bijarani brothers.
The petitioner, Karim Dad Banglani, told the judges that his clan was a supporter of the JUI-F. They had supported and voted in favour of their tribal chief, Jahangir Banglani, who had contested the elections from the PS-16 seat, against Pakistan Peoples Party’s Bijarani, which infuriated the latter, he alleged.
According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Muhammad Khan Buriro, some armed men belonging to the Bijarani tribe attacked Banglani houses in Karim Dan Banglani Goth and set them on fire in an act of revenge. The fire resulted in the deaths of two minor children but the police failed to take any action, the lawyer contended.
Ghulam Murtaza Nandani, another petitioner, also blamed the Bijarani brothers of subjecting their families to political victimisation for supporting the JUI-F candidate against them.
He alleged that the local police was harassing and lodging fraudulent cases against them at the behest of the Bijaranis which was illegal and unconstitutional. He pleaded to the court to restrain the police from implicating them in false cases on the dictation of the Bijaranis.
On Tuesday, the bench appointed Larkana DIG as the inquiry officer to investigate the allegations levelled by the petitioners in a ‘transparent’ manner and submit his report by July 16.
