Withdrawal of tax rebate: PMA activist fears brain drain

Dr Hashmi said that the tax rebate of 75 per cent was introduced in 2000-01 for full-time teachers and researchers.

KARACHI:
A senior member of the Pakistan Medical Association appealed to the authorities to review their decision of withdrawing the tax rebate for teachers and researchers. Dr Samrina Hashmi feared that the measure would adversely affect the health and education sectors. Dr Hashmi said that the tax rebate of 75 per cent was introduced in 2000-01 for full-time teachers and researchers to check the brain drain besides raising the standards of teaching, research, health services and other professional services in the country. Dr Hashmi added that the pay scales in the country were already far lower than in developed countries and the Gulf region and the measure, if implemented, would destroy the gains made in the last 10 years.
