LAHORE:

The Punjab government on Thursday told the Lahore High Court chief justice that a new bill was in the offering with regard to setting up of local governments in the province.

Hearing a petition moved by Local Councils Association Pakistan (LCAP) for holding local government elections without further delay, an additional advocate general stated that the new government was going to take a bill in the assembly covering the changes proposed in the local government system.

He said the other provinces had already passed similar laws. The CJ directed the law officer to produce the draft of the bill so the court should know “whether the government was trying to wrap up the local government system.” The CJ then adjourned the hearing till July 3. Earlier petitioner’s counsel, Zahid Minhas, argued that the previous government had announced plans to hold the polls on July 11. He said there was not much time left and sought court’s direction for the provincial government to hold the election.
