Tennis: Aqeel moves into quarters

Top-seed Aqeel Khan cruised into the quarter-finals of the Mehfooz Safar National Ranking Tennis Championship 2013 men’s singles event, defeating Heera Ashiq 6-1, 6-2 in Islamabad.


However, the major upset came when Abid Ali Akbar outclassed second-seed Yasir Khan 6-4, 6-2 in his prequarter-final match. He will face Imran Shaukat in the quarter-final today. Shaukat prevailed over Davis-Cupper Nomi Qamar 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Mudassir Murtaza booked a spot in the last-eight with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Abdal Haider in the boy’s under-18 singles event. Arham Atiq outplayed Haq 7-5, 6-1 and Muzammil Murtaza outclassed Yawar Abbas 6-2, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinal matches.
