The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has summoned the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP), seeking his views on a petition demanding the same rights for tribesmen as enjoyed by other citizens of the country.
A division bench comprising PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Qaisar Rasheed on Wednesday heard the petition filed by Ghufran through his counsel Advocate Noor Alam. The petition seeks equal rights for the residents of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). During the hearing, Justice Khan observed articles 246 and 247 of the Constitution have been challenged in the petition which was a very sensitive matter. He said it is essential the attorney general appear before the court in person in the next hearing to explain if it was possible to extend PHC’s jurisdiction to Fata.
Deputy Attorney General Iqbal Mohmand told the court he had contacted the newly-appointed attorney general regarding the case and that the latter wishes to appear in court.
