ISLAMABAD:

It is one thing to enjoy a concert in a packed crowd but nothing quite matches the thrill of having rockstars show up at one’s home unannounced. The latter, which would be gratifying for any music buff, is what happened to two students of Roots International School (RIS) this weekend.

The students were shocked beyond belief when members of the rock band Noori, Ali Noor and Ali Hamza threw surprise visits at their respective homes. The musicians said they were very impressed with the young talent and have selected them as Fanta Rockstars 2013 to perform with the band.

“This is a one in a million chance. I never thought I’d get the chance to perform alongside Noori,” said Maria Fatima, an A-Levels student.

A self-proclaimed “metal head”, Fatima also enjoys listening to jazz and blues.

Meanwhile, Shaheer Naveed, a seventh grader, could not believe his luck. “It feels fantastic and now that I can believe it, I’m very excited about performing next to Noori,” he told The Express Tribune. The avid Noori fan said that “Manwa Re” and “Mein Hoon Jawan” were his all-time favourite songs.

The RIS Chief Executive Officer congratulated the students and lauded their talent. “We really need to be honest about what counts in a performance and what young performers should be aspiring towards if they are to realise their dreams,” she said.

“Everyone has the liberty to express themselves in whichever way they prefer, which can even be through music. Music is the expansion of unlimited reality,” she added.

On Saturday, RIS had invited the musicians to hold auditions for soloists for an upcoming Fanta song where the young Rootsians performed and proved their mettle. The shortlisted students will perform with the band at concerts around the country.

The talent hunch that was launched in schools across the country aims to find young gifted singers for the recording of a Fanta song and music video. The Noori brothers, who are spearheading the campaign, have auditioned around 250,000 schoolchildren between the ages of 12 and 18, from nearly 250 schools.
