The NSA is in possession of a powerful data mining tool, which it uses to record and analyse massive amounts of digital data, a key source of its intelligence.
The Guardian reportedly acquired top-secret documents about the NSA tool, called Boundless Informant, that details and maps by country the amount of information it collects from telephone and computer networks.
According to a snapshot of the data for March 2013, the NSA gathered 13.5 billion intelligence reports from Pakistan during the 30-day period. The largest amount of data was collected from Iran, at 14 billion reports. Jordan came third with 12.7 billion, Egypt fourth with 7.6 billion and India fifth with 6.3 billion.
The agency collected 3 billion reports from American computer networks over the same period.
On Friday, US President Barack Obama mounted a staunch defense Friday of the recently exposed spy agency surveillance programs, telling Americans “nobody is listening to your telephone calls.”
Obama though maintained that there was a trade off to be made between national security and people’s privacy, though he said it was right that the exact balance between the two should be publicly debated.

"US agency collected second-highest amount of digital data from Pakistan"
I would not be surprised if more than 80% of it would be porn site requests.
@A J Khan:
Wrong. According to internet data collected from Pakistan, most would be about perverted porn fetishes.
@FactCheck:
Stealing intellectual property from Pakistan?!
Who gives a rat's bottom? Being liked by the US is always the kiss of death for most countries and especially Muslim ones. The only state in the world that the US is good for and true to, is Israel.
That's why Pakistan should wear US-hatred and distrust of it like a badge of honour ..
The US lost what little it had by way of a moral compass, a very long time ago... unsurprising for a country founded on genocide, nourished by the slave trade and sustained by perpetual aggression against country after country, by the plunder and looting of others' resources, the destruction of ancient civilisations, the committing of false flag upon false flag, internment in the 1940s, concentration camps in Guantanamo, Afghanistan and Iraq, drones and extra-judicial assassinations and numerous war crimes in Pakistan and elsewhere. 'Empire Inc' showed its bloodied fangs to Pakistan in 2001 after the latter had out-lived it 'usefulness' and had allowed itself to be used and abused it in every which way to win the Cold War for Uncle Sam.
The US is the beacon of tyranny and oppression on this earth.... that is the true nature of 'American exceptionalism'...
This is why US contempt of and mistrust for Pakistan is a reason for us Pakistanis to rejoice. Free at last!
Why would Americans spy on Pakistan? One phone call to our brave Generals, & the Americans get what they want. Just throw a rusting F - 16 & our brave men will bend in every possible direction.
@A J Khan:
The USA adminisration is not collecting but simply asking Googles, mcrosaft and telephonic world etc. to hand over the info. that these institutons have! And like the uk foreign secretary said if an individual has not committed a crime he should have no worries, his pivacy is safe with us. He has blinkers on, since the hacking software is being offered in chinese retail shops which would enable a criminal to obain codes of peoples bank acounts.
What is new about this leak by the whistle blower is that Uncle Sam has been spying on millions of its own citizens, as well as other collaborator Governments on their citizens, to the extent that even Hitler could not have imgined!

@Raj - USA:
You are damned right! China is not only watching but has a massive IT network to control not only the USA but all other industrial Nations and has no more patience but want the International communities to recognise that China is only super power of the world.

The higher they ride, the deeper they fall! The wind of greatest threat to democracy and freedom of citizen rights, is now coming from across the atlantic Nixon Country and not from the former communist countries or developing democacies!

@B: "Why, why did you forget dear my India." Dear B, Sorry B. I Thought I would only mention the most brutal terrorists in the world; namely the US/Israel/NATO. India and Pakistan have problems, but are still at the kindergarten stage.
This proves how important we are in the global scene. India and Afghanistan should take note.
I dont care whatever data NSA gather, but i do care if they gather data about my sms and call coz my gf and i dont want anyone to read our sms and listen to calls. lol....
most of these intercepts will be sms jokes
@Sexton Blake: Why, why did you forget my dear India.
And the American complain about the Chinese taking data from their systems.
We continue to adopt their system of democracy and industrialism even though we see the problems with those systems. They tell their people how we're against their freedom and way of life and justify their causes. Even though they do the exact same thing on us, against our freedom to practice Islam and against our way of life, to adopt an Islamic system. Muslims need to be one to counter this hypocrisy but we're turning into mindless consumerist zombies (just like their people) walking about without a care in the world. Bas mera eik acha sa pent house ban jayay kabhi aur achi see merc S class chalayay mera driver mere leeye.
@Imran Ahsan Mirza: Dear Imran, You have taught me something. Silly me always considered the US/Israel/NATO were the Centre Of World Terrorism. How could I get it so wrong?
the war of nations is on
@Raj - USA:
"China is not amongst the top countries watched by US as far as terror activities are concerned”. This must be based on your interpretation and understanding of terrorism. As far as US is concerned, China is the biggest economic terrorist by regularly stealing intellectual property which causes more damage to the US than misguided gun totting terrorists whose number of days on planet is numbered.
@Ali:
In principle may be, legally no. Everyone spies on every that is how much we trust each other.
As long as our society is based on greed and power and it will be for a freezable future because without promoting greed and power no politician will be able to control any country on this planet so,spying on each other will continue. Life as we know it may end before spying on each other ends.
N@ked truth.
A wide man once said, “there is enough on earth for man’s need but not for man’s greed”. Look up who the wise man was!
@Polpot:
May be Pakistan can ask for Royalty on the information collected. File suit to that effect in ICCC for stealing intellectual property!
Why are you surprised? One should be surprised why Pakistan is not #1.
As an American who travels to Pakistan often I'm sure they read my emails and review my phone records with some interest. Sorry to disappoint you Uncle Sam but I remain a patriotic American who also happens to be fond of Pakistan despite all the current problems.
Great !! At least this can help determine the world - how far they are from TODAY !!!!
@Imran Ahsan Mirza: Dear i appreciate your comments, but this is not something new to the world the same evil torn Russia apart and since now the mandate contradicts American aspiration so we have become AXIS OF EVIL. What about Pakistan's interest? No sovereign state sacrifices own freedom at the whims of foreign powers.
This is what they are doing for the last 2 decades.
Nice drama by PRETENDING a fuss over it.
When a technology becomes obsolete , they make the best show out of it.
Now the Americans will show the world how they made their accountable for what they are doing. They need this feeling of self righteousness .
The real question is what they are doing NOW.
They are probably scanning/recording the whole planet on a QUANTUM level .
Something probably our grand children will discover in their lifetime...
Most of Pakistani data would be about; 1. Load shedding. 2. Rigging in election. 3. Target killings. 4. Inter/intra party abuses. 5. Judicial gimmicks. 6. Redundancy & joblessness 7. Desperations/Hopelessness /Despair 8. Bureaucratic financial thefts & corruptions.
I want my privacy!
This is not new, after 9-11, black boxes were installed at the major ISP level in Pakistan to monitor so called "suspicious" activities.
so called "Sovereign and Independent Pakistan!
This is not surprising considering that Pakistan has become the global epicenter of terrorism. It makes sense for the US to do all it can to prevent terror attacks before the would be perpetrators carry out the act.
Article should also have mentioned that their primary sources of information are Facebook and Google.
Are we really worth of that much attention.
No wonder my email account has been displaying the following message since many days:
'We believe state-sponsored hackers have been trying to access your account. To protect yourself you can do the following....'
and still if we apply for American Visa, we are kept in administrative processing for years!
Allah knows everything, America knows many things. I think US is watching India also because of the support for terror and unpatriotic activities in some quarters. US also reads newspaper columns, readers comments, etc. A member of Parliament in India may walk away when a patriotic song is played and another may ask the government to remove the police force for 15 minutes so that they can show what they can do. All these convey different message to US. US are not watching maoists in India. China is not amongst the top countries watched by US as far as terror activities are concerned.
Those who are using the latest media and communication tools invented by the US cannot scape the scrutiny by the big brother. It is a shame that the US govt is doing this to the US citizens which is a grey area in law. Even though I condemn this act but I have nothing to hide therefore I am not worried at all.
I mistakenly deleted an email can NSA please check from their database and retrieve it ?
"According to a snapshot of the data of March 2013 the NSA gathered 13.5 billion intelligence report from Pakistan during the 30-day period".
And what did US got out of it?
All govts spy nothing new in that, only some get caught
No surprises there
"The US agency collected second highest amount of data from Pakistan" however once the data was mined, the agency realised that 99% of the web based data were simple porn-searches on the net by bored Pakistanis !
And the american public thinks this will make them safe? Lol. Apparently, most things USA are rotten right down to the core these days. Sacrificing liberty for security means they deserve neither.
so spying other nations is moral and not a crime at all ?? Then why US blames China for Hacking ??
This makes me sick...
I should quit commenting on Pakistani newspapers.
"US agency collected second-highest amount of digital data from Pakistan" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wow all that Pakistan needs now is to to monetize this and solve all its problems.
What a surprise!!!!!
This is one more example in the telepathic powers of illiterate and backward Pakistanis who are often dismissed for cooking up conspiracy theories. The things a common man on the street is talking about are often proved correct after about ten years have passed. I hope the elite class stops to ignore the concerns of common people and stop dismissing everything as a conspiracy theory if a proof is not available immediately. We know imperial mind very well because as the Beatles would put it, they and us have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead !
ISI where are you?
What did they make of by spying on my comments on this news ?
This man is a genius
What did they make of by peeping Sheikh Rasheed's tweets ?
Someone ban the twitter plz :)
Just few yards away from President, PM Houses & Intelligence Agencies,as is known to all & sundry,surveillance gadgets are installed.The satellite system gives them over view of things moving here on ground.With this system they claim they can even read the license plates(no.plates ) of cars.So,we are being watched & surrounded with such a massive intelligence system.Their claim seems correct.
Is just because they love us so much...
O the irony of commenting online on a piece of news about being spied on online!
Yeah, but who cares. How can possibly they read and listen to these 'billions' of reports. Would take them decades to go through all data and it will be outdated by then anyway. :P
There is a huge difference between "intelligence reports" and digital information gathered. This refers to digital information. An intelligence report would be based on digital information, human intelligence etc and would be authored by a person. Billions of digital points of data collected would include cellular metadata (that we share with the US eg, look up how Mullah Baradar was caught), microwave transmissions captured and other forms of communication data and metadata. They are not "intelligence reports".
Because Pakistan is the so called "Centre of Terrroism" in the world. Americans have the right to stay informed on all their enemies.
