LAHORE:

Buildings having four storeys or more would be given 30 days starting from June 10 to install fire safety equipment and emergency staircases, DCO Rizwan Mehbood said on Tuesday.

In a meeting held here, the DCO said that notices would be dispatched to building owners in the City by June 10, 2013.

He directed all town administrators and the LDA chief town planner to ensure that all buildings had: independent and open steel staircases with access to all floors, emergency exit ways, a certification of safety and good quality from the Energy Department and firefighting equipment on all floors.

It was decided that in the interest of the residents of the buildings, relevant provisions of the LDA Building and Zoning Regulations 2008 are to be implemented strictly.

Failure to comply with the safety measures within 30 days after June 10 could result in the buildings being sealed and registration of cases against the owners.

Town municipal administrations (TMAs) would constitute teams to inspect all high-rise buildings.
