The previous deputy commander, Wali-ur-Rehman, was killed in an attack by a missile-firing U.S. drone aircraft in the militant stronghold of North Waziristan, on northwest Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, on Wednesday, Pakistani security officials and militants said.
A Pakistani Taliban committee met late on Wednesday to chose a new deputy after Waliur Rehman was buried in a low-key ceremony, three Taliban members told Reuters.
The Taliban members said the new number two, Khan Said, 38, had served as Rehman's deputy. He was involved in planning a 2011 attack on a Pakistani navy base in Karachi in which 18 people were killed and a 2012 jail break in which nearly 400 militant inmates escaped, they said.
"There was absolute consensus over Khan Said," one Pakistani Taliban member said.
Wednesday's drone strike, that killed six other people, was the first in Pakistan since a May 11 general election in which strikes by the unmanned US aircraft was a major issue.
It was also the first reported US drone strike since President Barack Obama announced last week that the United States was scaling back the drone programme.
The Pakistani Taliban are a separate entity to the Afghan Taliban, though allied with them. Known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, they have launched devastating attacks against the Pakistani military and civilians.
Waliur Rehman had been tipped to succeed Hakimullah Mehsud as leader of the Pakistan Taliban and had been viewed as someone less hostile to the Pakistani military than some other top operatives.
Peace effort?
While his death is a major blow for the militants, it could be also viewed as a setback for incoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's efforts to end violence.
He criticised drone strikes during the election campaign, describing them at one point as a "challenge" to Pakistan's sovereignty. Sharif also offered to hold talks with the militants, something that now looked less likely, according to one senior security official.
"Wali-ur-Rehman was a serious and mature man, his death could hurt prospects for an expected peace initiative considered by the new government," the official told Reuters.
However, many observers said any meaningful settlement with the Taliban was unlikely in any case given Sharif's condition that the starting point for talks be respect for the country's democratic order and institutions.
The White House did not confirm the killing, in line with its practice not to discuss drone strikes.
But its spokesman Jay Carney said Wali-ur-Rehman "has participated in cross-border attacks in Afghanistan against US and NATO personnel and horrific attacks against Pakistani civilians and soldiers".
Drones armed with missiles have carried out numerous strikes against militants in the North Waziristan Pashtun tribal region over the past seven years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.
A US drone killed Pakistani Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud in 2009. There had been several reports that his successor, Hakimullah Mehsud, was killed the same way but they turned out to be false.
North Waziristan has long been a stronghold of militants including Afghan Taliban and their al Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban allies.

With the new and improved ground intelligence, the drones must strike more telling blows. It would be great to strike them during their elecions gathering or press conference.
We need to control the factors and to cut the supply line, which are creating and empowering these Talibans. Taliban halt the negotiation talk.. Government screwed it asusual.
Lol...so every time you kill a number 1 or number 2...more will be born in those ranks...whats the point ?
@A.M.Khan:
So why do Imran and NS want to talk to them instead of punishing for their deeds?
@A.M.Khan: @watercooler: I agree with what you say in the first paragraph of your comment. I have been saying the same for months that it would be in Pakistan's interest to openly ask USA and NATO for help to wipe out the talibans. Once US and NATO forces vacate the region, Pakistan will be left on its own and talibans will rule the country. Pakistan's army should openly and explicitly ask for assistance from US and NATO. They should openly allow US and NATO forces to operate within Pakistan. Pakistan's army should cooperate and work jointly with them. Foreign armies will have their boots on ground in Pakistan's soil. However, if Pakistan allows it willingly, it would not a violation of its sovereignty. US and NATO forces are not interested in having a permanent presence in Pakistan. They shall vacate the region once the talibans and terrorists are eliminated. If Pakistan does not trust US and NATO, they can ask China to help. Chinese forces can also do it effectively. In the end Pakistan can regain its territory and the sovereignty it has already lost.
The damage caused by Imran Khan is immense. He is educated and has charisma and personality but lacks thinking. He has misused his popularity and has taken the country further down.
@A.M.Khan: You say: The faces in the picture are not Pakistani anyways
Totally agree with you and this is what I have said in one of my earlier comment also. I have asked the question there that if Pakistanis want to be ruled by foreigners or tattooed talibans? Imran Khan should address this question, specifically and clearly. Let us see what he has to say on this.
I have said this countless times and I say it again, Taliban are not people that you can get rid of to remove this menace .. Taliban is an ideology .. you need to do more to completely root it out.
These terrorists have no remorse for killing thousands of innocents. They are only concerned with achieving their deadly objectives. They have a common goal of destabilizing the region with their acts of terror, and we shouldn’t be surprised that they have already found a replacement. At the same time, we need to remain vigilant against those who pose a threat to the safety of our nations. They’ve made it clear on several occasions that they see our nations as a common threat to their evil mission. In that case, there is no reason why we can’t work together to counter this threat. They are fully focused on destabilizing the region, and it only makes sense for us to combine our strength against these terrorists.
Ali Khan
Hope a drone somewhere has him in its radar before the next revenge attack on markets, schools , polio workers, peace jirga members etc etc........
Some thing fishes.
Either we are foolish to beleive peace will happen .
Or they are foolish who them bomb them believing peace will come throw drone attacks.
Something don't sound right either way. It like a game every one want to continue
@watercooler: Why not try these virus on yourself first?
Its almost funny how they promote people on their performance, the perimeter being how many innocent people the person helped killing, may ALLAH guide us all to a life where we let others live in peace.
They all seem to be well fed and slightly on the chubby side. Are we sure they are not also living comfortably somewhere in Abbotabad?
No words from Nawaz & imran. pretending that they are not in country
The faces in the picture are not Pakistani anyways
Tum kitnay Taliban maro gay, ghar ghar say Taliban niklay ga. About time we realized that this war is not a war of guns and bombs but one of ideology. If we work towards eliminating the flawed ideology of Taliban amongst Muslims, no more drone strikes or war on terror would be necessary.
what the pakistan army is lacking is specialized aircraft such as the apaches with thermal imaging. if you see apaches performing and killing taliban on youtube you would realize how effective they are!we are relying on age old technology of imperfect bombing by jets!in insurgency situations they do not work! i think asking america in this regard would really help!
secondly, peace talks are okay and we should definitely get them together under one roof and bomb them!i was actually thinking how come the Pakistani intelligence hasn't thought about some kind of a deadly virus to kill all the mehsuds! i mean i as a student of medicine suggest them in using a deadly virus such as ebola or something to wipe their race of the map!and they wouldnt even realize it happenign to them, provided they dont log onto ET
see, this is the thing I dont get about taliban story. here u have these news reporters, sitting there, interviewing them peacefully and having a niceQ&A session with the 'terrorists' with a sip of coffee....okay. So why not simply led the authorities to them so they can prosecute them??? Like how do Taliban even give answers to "pakistani" journalists when they hardly negotiate with authorities. Why do they never blow up journalists?
By the way, I have not come across this 'footage' anywhere on the internet. Are these Taliban cavemen so intelligent that they just send one video to whoever they want to send?
How are these cavemen able to carry such deadly attacks against a well trained ARMY? I'm sorry but the army really has not be able to fully defend us from these so called taliban attacks. Lastly, since they keep blowing themselves up in suicide attacks and so many of them have died...when r they gonna wipe out? We have facts and numbers with everything but not with taliban, surprisingly.
Those are the fattest Arabs I have ever seen, they must be living well.
Time for another drone.
I hope we can somehow lure them all in one place under the pretext of negotiations on how to impose Shariah and then bomb them
Kill number one, kill number two and there are successors to fill these positions and that is how, US cat and mouse game will continue and, this country will never see peace.
I'm not a Metallica fun, but one of their album titles comes to mind: "Kill 'Em All"
seems like they are partying.
is it not surprising that despite of having all updates about the Taliban we are still unable to arrest all of them.
