RAWALPINDI:

In view of heightened security threats, ex-president Pervez Musharraf, on Tuesday, requested an anti-terrorism court (ATC) to exempt him from appearing before the bench in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

Defence counsel Barrister Salman Safdar filed two applications in the court of ATC-I Special Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rahman for exempting his client from attending the proceedings due to security reasons. The first one was for exemption from attendance on Tuesday while in the second he requested complete exemption from court appearance.

The court accepted the application for exemption on Tuesday and issued notices to the Federal Investigation Agency regarding the second application.  The case has been adjourned till June 11.

Lawyers’ torture case

In a separate case, the court removed the name of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) leader Dr Amjad from an FIR registered against him in the lawyers’ torture case. Dr Amjad was booked in the lawyers’ torture case, after APML supporters attacked lawyers with sticks and blades, injuring several of them on April 24, outside the ATC in the garrison city.

However, he convinced the police that he was in Lahore on the day when APML supporters attacked lawyers. The police informed the court that they did not need Dr Amjad as he was not present at the scene.

The court asked the police to remove Dr Amjad’s name from the FIR after which he withdrew his bail application. In the same case, the court granted interim bail to APML leader Nasrullah Khan Jaral and ordered him to submit a surety bond of Rs0.1 million.

What a travesty of justice. He was arrested when he was not even present during the incident. Shall we say it was all politically motivated? And who is arresting the lawyers that we saw on previous days beating up APML workers? Totally biased reporting, sorry to say.
