Crackdown: RTA inspects vehicle fitness

RTA urged the transporters to get their vehicles’ fitness certificates before putting their vehicle on the road.

RAWALPINDI: Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on Monday launched a drive to inspect the fitness of public transport vehicles, CNG cylinders and ensure no petrol containers were installed inside the vehicles. Following the tragedy in Gujrat in which 14 schoolchildren and their teacher were burnt to death when their van caught fire, due to a spark in a petrol container, the RTA Monday launched a crackdown on public transport An official of RTA Asif Nawaz Khan told APP that on Monday 167 vehicles were checked while two vehicles which were unfit for public transport were impounded. He informed that RTA is also verifying registration papers, registration plates, route permits of vehicles and over-loading. The RTA spokesman urged the transporters to get their vehicles’ fitness certificates before putting their vehicle on the road, as damaged vehicles would not be allowed to ply on roads.
