MULTAN: A woman, who was shot allegedly by her former husband four days ago in Jampur, died at the Nishtar Hospital on Monday. Her family said she had been seven-month pregnant. The fetus had expired and was surgically removed on the day if the incident.

Police have yet to arrest a suspect.

Police said the woman, Saima Bibi, 28, had sought dissolution of her marriage to Ahsan Baloch in 2011, two years after the marriage. They said she had accused him of torture for they did not have children. She had already left home and had started living with her parents.

The dissolution was granted in 2012.

A few months later, police said, she remarried.

Raza Baloch, father of the victim, told police that Ahsan Baloch had been in Dubai during this time.

He returned after his visa expired and heard the news of Saima Bibi’s remarriage and pregnancy.

He had threatened to kill her. He said he (Ahsan Baloch) had also threatened to file a case against her accusing her of remarrying without a proper divorce.

On Thursday, police said, Ahsan Baloch entered Saima Bibi’s home and shot her six times in the abdomen. He then fled.

Saima Bibi was taken to the tehsil headquarters hospital by some neighbours, from where she was sent to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. Doctors treating her said that the fetus had expired and was removed shortly after she was brought to the hospital. Saima Bibi had been kept on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, where she succumbed to her injuries on Monday.

An FIR was registered with the Jampur city police on the complaint of the victim’s husband.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Station House Officer Hafiz Ghulam Fareed said that the police were looking for Ahsan Baloch.

He said six places had been raided so far but he was not found. He said the suspect was believed to have fled to Rajanpur.
