HARIPUR:

Over nine jail inmates in Haripur Central Prison stitched their lips on Sunday in protest for being sent to solitary confinement. Some 42 others joined in by going on hunger strike.

According to the jail administration, the prisoners were caught selling drugs and were punished with solitary confinement as a result.

Criminal cases were also registered against them for violating prison rules. Approximately 51 prisoners have been locked in single barracks. After negotiating with the inmates for three hours, jail officials convinced them to call off their hunger strike.

According to Jail Superintendent Masoodur Rehman, at least five inmates sewed their lips and instigated 42 others to go on hunger strike. He said criminal proceedings have been initiated against the protesting prisoners.

“Those who stitched their lips have been locked in qasoori chakis (punishment cells) under jail laws,” he said.
