More than 5,000 children will be affected by the government’s decision to shut down 75 primary schools in Cholistan by March 2014 due to a lack of funds.
Cholistan Development Authority Deputy Director Muhammad Qamar Zaman on Saturday said seven schools had already closed down following budget cuts by the caretaker government. These include four in Rahim Yar Khan [Chak 258R, 156R, 153R and 1.2/240] and three in Bahawalpur [Chak 50D, 156DNB, and 128DNB.]
“The remaining 68 would also close down by March 2014,” he said. The schools were set up under the Rs57 million Literate Cholistan Project in 2009 for the promotion of education in the backward areas of Cholistan.
Two teachers were hired for each school under the project. The responsibility for the school buildings was entrusted to the local communities.
Zaman said, “In an area spread over 6,655,360 acres of land, there are only 21 government schools.
All of them lack basic facilities.” “It is astonishing that nobody has taken serious steps in this regard…there is no middle school here, public or private,” he said.
He said as many as 50,000 children were deprived of education in Cholistan. Under the circumstances, Zaman said, the CDA schools were doing fairly well. “The results of primary class examinations in the last two-years were encouraging. This goes on to show that the children are interested in education,” he said.
In 2009, a summary recommending better salaries for the CDA school teachers was rejected by the government. As of now, the monthly salary of a senior teacher is Rs5,000, and that of a junior teacher is Rs2,500.

Say No to this decision... What happened to Promise "Parhla Likha Pakistan" Emergency Education. All Big Fat Lie they have money for motor ways, metro buses, foreign trips but they do not have budget for EDUCATION.
i m ashamed of having such a news from Pakistan n even more ashamed of those people who r trying to justify it .....these schools cost govt. @ 6,75000 per annum but not affordable but yesterday Punjab govt was going to purchase a fleet of new vehicles for its bureaucracy @ 12 Crore.....now people should think why people in Baluchistan make BLF,BLA etc...... plz dont compel the people around u to be in hatred ............its still time to rethink
Since PMLN government has left Punjab bankrupt there is not much the caretakers can do. Punjab's overdraft currently exceed rest of provinces combined tuning to over Rs 700 billion.
set up in 2009 under PMLN and closed by the caretaker government. did people not read that or do they have a mental block when it comes to PMLN doing something good?
Khadema Ala elect should view this as an emergency. Closing of schools in an area which is already deprived of basic ameneties is worse than killing of girls in primitive ages. Moreover he has been talking a lot about south punjab during elections. Now is time for him to show his real worth. Shahbaz should immediately announce a crisis team and solve the problem by allotting necessary funds. Khadema Ala sahib no more rhetorics ...when you can give subsidy on Mass transit bus system why not some funds to schools. Go and sit there for a day or two. We are looking forward to your actions....
The elections showed it is in the best interest of the rulers to keep the nation uneducated, as education would free their minds and they might vote for someone else. The easiest way to enslave these people is to deprive them of education
and yet we talk about metro bus, bullet trains...where are our priorities
Ah but there is money for bombs...so what if no money for schools? Distorted priorities...
And by the way I do get the need to have nuclear power to balance India but is 100 bombs not sufficient? To be the nation with the fastest growing nuclear arsenal where the schools have to be closed down and there is no money for fuel leading to 20 hour load shedding...amazing.
So within the length of 200 KM and a radius of 135 KM ( 26936 KM) there are 21 government primary schools ( total population is not mentioned )and 50000 children are left to roam.. . What will they do in teen age and adulthood? No reason to complain after this state of affair, a mindset which is least concerned to the area. It will increase ethnicity , frustration and hate. Very unfortunate.
Rather than spending money on metro buses they should have spent money on education of our beautiful kids who deserved it.......
It cannot happen under Mian Shehbaz Sharif's watch.
How sad.... Can they team up with Shezad Roy, expats and PTI and get each school upgraded and sponsored...
not a surprise in this country..
Government had to make some tough decisions. The cost of running these schools is equivalent to cost of one F-16 or two JT-17 or two missiles from North Korea. Money spent on these schools will lead to 5000 job creation in Pakistan or ten jobs in US for making one F-16, Twenty Jobs in China to make two planes or ten jobs in North Korea. Maintaining nuclear assets costs money too. ZAB said we are prepared to eat grass. Time has come to eat the grass and create some jobs overseas over those in Pakistan.
Amazing decision - who is the caretaker government to take these decisions cut the funds of the governor house or security detail instead. TCF schools should be set up here instead
