No Nobel Prize for Peace was given in 1948. This was because the Nobel Committee was so embarrassed by its repeated ignoring of Gandhi, who was killed on January 30 of that year, that it chose to observe his passing in silence. It remains the most striking omission in the history of the prize. Much later, in 1999, the organisation published the background of why it continually rejected the man who transformed Hinduism, liberated India, inspired Martin Luther King to liberate Americans from their bigotry and is now called the apostle of peace.
In 1937, Gandhi was first nominated for the prize by the Norwegian parliament and Ole Colbjornsen of the Labour Party. “He is undoubtedly a good, noble and ascetic person,” the committee assessing him was told by an expert. On the other hand, he was “too much of an Indian nationalist”. On that ground, the prize that year was given to Viscount Cecil of Chelwood. History remembers him as the man famous for wanting all nations to speak the common language called Esperanto.
Gandhi was nominated again in 1938, 1939 and 1947. Each time, someone else was chosen. In 1948, Gandhi was nominated for the last time, this time by independent India. Even the London Times felt moved to admit that if Partition had not produced even more bloodshed than it did, “Gandhi’s teachings should get a substantial part of the credit”. But yet again, the Nobel Committee felt Gandhi was not deserving. The truth is that till 1960, only Europeans and Americans were deserving enough to win the award. Coloured people were coloured in their nationalism as much as in their skin. After Martin Luther King won the award in 1964, in his Nobel Lecture he said of Gandhi: “He struggled only with the weapons of truth, soul force, non-injury and courage.”
When he was martyred, Gandhi was considered for a posthumous prize, which would have been unique, because the Nobel is only given to the living. But just leaving the prize go un-awarded was thought a better way of acknowledging him. And in 1999, as we have seen, the committee felt moved enough by guilt to publish an explanation of its omission.
Knowing this background, it is difficult to understand why Abdul Sattar Edhi has not been given the Nobel Prize for Peace. In terms of impact, personal credibility and devotion, his services to humanity are unmatched. He began as a man, who sought to give the dead a respectable burial, but then began also to heal the living. Edhi currently houses 6,000 destitute people. He has saved 20,000 abandoned babies, raised 50,000 orphans and trained 40,000 nurses. These are staggering numbers and it’s puzzling and sad that the Nobel Committee has ignored him this long. Even if it gives him the award this year, it must ask itself why it took it till he was 85 to recognise his gift. And this, when it has continued its bizarre choices. Who could have thought that Henry Kissinger would win a peace prize? Or Yasser Arafat? What contributions to peace has Al Gore made, or for that matter, Barack Obama?
Edhi has much in common with Gandhi. Both are Gujarati and fellow Kathiawadis. Both are eccentric individuals produced by Gujarat’s superb mercantile community. Gandhi was a Bania and Edhi is a Memon, converted from the Lohana caste of merchants. Both felt their primary responsibility was social work. Both made this work their life — Gandhi for 60 years, till a fanatic took him away from us, and Edhi for even longer. Both lived in austerity and both were uncompromisingly secular. Both were ignored by the Nobel Committee, to its shame.
One of them is dead and cannot be given the award. The other, however, is alive. The Nobel Committee will have to again explain its omission if Abdul Sattar Edhi is not recognised by it this October for the hero he is. Awarding it to Edhi will raise the value of the Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan and India must lobby strongly in his favour.

Forget about Nobel prize, the government of Pakistan has not awarded the highest civilian award to this great man yet while Chinese Premier gets it just to show himself.
@Ikramullah
"If there is at all an award for a rogue politician, it should first go to Mr.Kisinger."
Nursing the same feeling since the day I heard it on radio. On an aside, it beats me how Obama is awarded a Nobel prize when someone like Desmond Tutu of South Africa is ignored. P.S. Desmond Tutu not only publicly decried Iraq war, but also refused to share a dias with Tony Blair and opined that he (Blair) should be tried in ICC in Hague.
The Nobel prize is not that much noble and its value is devalued when it was given to Kissinger who is neither a statesman nor a gentleman. He use abusive words against third world countries and their leaders. If there is at all an award for a rogue politician, it should first go to Mr.Kissinger.
@antanu: "@Water Bottle: you live in a bottle….? Dude you are absolutely wrong about your perception…. tell me how many seats or votes are secured by jihadist groups in Pakistan? truth is the people have resoundingly sent them to dustbin and u still claim that these people are worshipping kasab and the likes?it’s high time you change your mindset. " . You mean to say that the budget allocated by Indian Ministry of Information is way too much.

Aakar Sahab Nobel peace prizes are always awarded for political reasons, so I am only glad that edhi sahab was not awarded one. The list of Nobel peace prize is led by US president and excellencies Obama, Wilson and Henry Kissinger, third world leaders who played fiddle to the West like Shimon Peres and yasser Arafat and rebels against countries opposed to Western hegemony like Chinese author Liu Xiabao and Iranian lawyer Miss Shirin Ebadi
No award has been given to people of Tunisia and Egypt for overthrowing Western backed dictators but an award was given to EU. Other recipients during the current century include IAEA, United Nations, Kofi Annan for absolutely nothing.
People like Mother Teressa and Nelson Mandela are awarded a prize roughly every 8-10 years to increase the credibility of the Prize, what is has done however, is only creating an exception to the rule.
The fact is A. S. Edhi is helping the poorest of the poor. In fact it is the motto of his wife and family to do this work for all humans. The problem with ASE Sahib is he does not have an elitist lobby and supporters. He should have been recognized with every possible award in te world. He is one of the best human beings and a living example of how a Pakistani Muslim should be. They do not come any better than Sir Edhi. We all love you very much. If I have to answer about my role model or a single great Pakistani I would say A. S. Edhi without any hesitation.
@akbar.shad: "I never understand why our people want to win noble oscars etc. Why we demand acceptance from the west why can’t we devise our own prizes and give recognition to our people." . If you want to get somewhere, you need approval from the West. BB was Darling of the West so is Imran Khan. Edhi may be furthest away from being a Maulana yet he is labeled as one. Do you seriously think that he would host a dinner for the glitterati where they pay $1000 per plate and their pictures are wired all over the world. The poor man has never worn jeans or eaten a hamburger. . There definitely is a parallel universe.
If, People with one hospital can claim Prime Ministership of Pakistan.
Then,
Abdul Sattar Edhi deserves the Prime Ministership and the Nobel both.
Aakar Ahmed bhai, why not we make something our own peace prize lets decide the name Mohan Das Karam Das Gandhi Peace prize for any one in the world who make peace in kashmir and in palestine.....
@Author You only mention Gandhi, but what about Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah? And what about the poet, philosopher Iqbal and nuclear scientist A Q Khan? There is always a bias against Pakistanis.
Wake up people when will will stop this stupidity. We want approval from Nobel Committee. Are we so defeated that that is our aspiration. Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. What a joke! And we want their approval from such disgusting people. Edhi Sahb will be rewarded by his creator as a result of nomination far greater than the Nobel Committee. This nomination of the duas of the people he has helped that will nominate him to Allah and give him high status in the Afterlife..
I it is sad that inspite Abdul Sattar Edhi there is a lot of prejudice against Memons. I heard them described as not pure enough in their Islamic beliefs.
Nobel prize is often awarded to people whose reputation is not tainted
my comment is not aimed at Gandhi a great leader and philosopher but to edhi
there are skeletons which people dont talk about
Edhi is an angel. He helps people regardless of religion, cast, colour or creed. He has stood up for every downtrodden person in Pakistan. He gives funerals to unclaimed dead bodies lying on the streets. God bless him.
I never understand why our people want to win noble oscars etc. Why we demand acceptance from the west why can't we devise our own prizes and give recognition to our people.
@Shakir Lakhani: You are correct - they are supposed to be of the warrior class and claim descent from the son of Lord Ram. However, much like the Khatris, they took to trade instead of military and administrative affairs and are thus predominantly a merchant community.
I am not sure as to why Tribune has not published my original comment, when I am sticking to their guidelines.
Why non whites have to clamor for recognition from a white man is beyond me. Even after so many years this slave mentality has not left him, even though the slave owner had packed up his bags a long time ago. Gandhi's work stands for itself, and it neither enhanced or diminished by him being given a mere nobel prize.
Why are you we still taking the Nobel prize seriously? They have awarded it to Obama, who has sent drones terrorizing the tribal areas and killing civillians. Why wasn't his award revoked? You've mentioned other names but you forgot the last one, the EU. That just says it all. These awards are not worth anything.
I'm surprised that we're still naive enough to honor the so-called prestige of these utterly worthless awards.
"Edhi is a Memon, converted from the Lohana caste of merchants". Wrong English. It wasn't Edhi who converted, his forbears converted to Islam around 250 years ago (like mine did). And I've always been told that the Lohanas (the ones from Sindh) were warriors, not merchants. Of course, I could be wrong.
ET.........For the last 16 hours no comment has been posted, could you please check at your end ?
I think Mahatma Gandhi not being awarded the Nobel peace prize doesn't bring down the great man's status, its more an issue of credibility with the awards. I have been reading about Mr. Edhi for a long time in Pakistani media - though it is after reading this article that I understand the scope of work he has done. In this case, an acknowledgement will be welcome but I don't think he really needs a certification from anyone. His work - and the lasting impact it has created - will be a far greater tribute than a medal or a certification. In any case, the Nobel peace prize doesn't seem to be as credible as the rest of the prizes - with laureates such as Barak Obama (awarded for not being George Bush?!), Henry Kissinger (I guess they were grateful that he retired) and Yasser Arafat (He promised to stop hijacking aircraft).
Awarding the Nobel peace prize to Kissinger, the butcher of Cambodia and Laos, only cheapened it. Furthermore the awarding committee of the Noble, all whites, saw it fit to award the Nobel peace prize to the astounding economist, Mohammed Yunus, whose absolutely creative ideas of micro-financing saw no merit by the afore-mentioned committee, the members of whom saw it fit to award Mr Yunus the peace prize instead. Mr Yunus's ideas uplifted the lives of countless millions. Let us not get too carried away by the Noble and its awards.
To this day I question what really Obama has contributed to the peace internationally or even in the US. People were fed up by Bush's wars and the incompetence and they look for some one new, Obama was a fluke and we know it.To us liberals in the US, Kissinger should have been tried for war crimes, he could not wash away the blood of Cambodians from his hands. When they awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama and Al Gore, it became clear to us that it was all about politics and nothing else, the prize has less credilibility now than it did before. Come to think about it, they should have awarded the prize to Bush, Chaney, and Rumsfeld too, they have done such a superb job for humanity in Iraq. Yes, Abdul Sattar Edhi has done some outstanding work for humanity and deserve all the credit, we have been pushing his name for years but some how the Commando and the NRO President will not nominate his name. Please tell us if they did, and it may be too late now for this year's award.I appreciate your article.
Aakar, I usually disagree with you on all your anti Gujarati stunts especially against the great NaMo Modi. But this time I must with an open heart welcome you in support of Nobel prize for Edhi Saheb. What a great man he is. Edhi Saheb is a man from my area of Saurashtra. Long live Edhi Saheb in the service of people.
I agree with Aakar and I am sure there are black brown people that deserve the award. IK certainly as a good person has done good work. India is powerful nation and so is China it is about another prize was setup who can reward the people left out before. How about Sir Ganga Ram and DJ (Diwan Dayaram Jethamal) in Karachi and many others. Now India and China has various billionaire they can setup a parallel reward if they have some sense of community service.
Mr.Aakar Patel.......We are immeasurably grateful to you for having projected our living legend Abdul Sattar Edhi Sahib & have pleaded his case forcefully for Nobel Peace Prize.Who else could be more deserving for the coveted Prize than him.One also requests the governments of Pakistan & Bharat to push & lobby for Edhi Sahib. It will be a joint effort in the right direction if the Civil societies of both countries also participate in projecting Edhi Sahib for Oct 13 Nobel Peace Prize.
Mr.Patel is intellectual colonial. Why should anyone lobby for peace Nobel when he himself can see it's too political to command any respect
Agree with the author word by word.
Finally a piece that I can agree with - Edhi definitely deserves the Peace Prize, and it is a shame that his humanitarian efforts have not been acknowledged. Of course, with time, the Peace Prize itself has reduced in stature not just by its omissions but also by awarding many of those whom Mr Patel has listed.
spot on Aakar. ...as an Indian I fully agree with you without any biad and prejudice. ...However. ..we have one third of the humanity in the sub continent. ..why cant we start a particular award....why we must treat NOBLE as sacred ...which is not so sacred anymore. ..
Aakar sahib can't be more true for all that he has written in this article. Every word carries enormous weight. Thanks for a brilliant article. Humanity needs a healing touch. Humanity needs freedom from bias, bigotry and cruelty.
Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi definitely deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. I agree with Mr. Aakar Patel that Pakistan & India should lobby strongly in his favor.
It seems as if the mental slavery has not left the brown man, even though the white man released him from slavery a long time ago.
Thanks for this informative piece. I have often wondered why the great Edhi Saheb never got the Noble Peace prize as seemingly less deserved continue to receive it year after year. Now I know that even Gandhi never got the Noble peace prize tells me that there are indeed flaws in how this award is conferred. Political considerations play an important part. It is a shame that only hurts the credibility of the award.
