MUMBAI:

It seems as if Bollywood is becoming an industry of families, just as politics remains only with the feudal lords. With his elder brother being associated with a film production banner and his younger brother becoming a video jockey-turned-actor, actor and director Kunaal Roy Kapur feels that even though they are not really a film family, they have ended up becoming one.

However, the three have entered filmdom via different routes — elder brother Siddharth Roy Kapur is the managing director of Disney UTV Studios while younger brother Aditya, who was last seen in Mahesh Bhatt’s Aashiqui 2, is an actor.

“I wouldn’t call us a film family. We have followed different routes into the film world. My brother Siddharth came from the corporate sector and had his own route. Whereas I came in through theatre and TV and Aditya, as a VJ. We aren’t really born into a film family,” said Kunaal.

Kunaal, who was seen acting in films such as Delhi Belly and Nautanki Saala, revealed that his grandfather came to Mumbai to make films, but couldn’t get much success.

“Our grandfather came here to make films; he made some, but failed miserably at it,” he said. “My dad was in the army and my mother was a dance teacher.”

Before facing the camera, Kunaal went behind the lens to direct The President Is Coming, a satirical mocku-mentary. “It takes a certain amount of political and social awareness to be able to enjoy satire,” he said.

“You have to be aware of the social climate at that time. It works in context to what is happening in society,” he added. “For people who are aware, it is a great form of entertainment as it is sourcing from what is there.”
