As mercury rises, hundreds of tourists are thronging the scenic Neelam Valley of Azad Kashmir. The hotels and guest houses are brimming with visitors who have come to enjoy the picturesque valley.
Located over 4,000 metres above sea level, the valley has become a popular picnic spot over the last decade. Stepping into Pataka, the gateway of the valley, the visitors enjoy green mountains with dense forests on both sides of Neelum River.
According to locals, more than 0.5 million tourists visited the valley last year, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif. He spent two days at Towbutt, the last helmet of Azad Kashmir near the Line of Control (LoC). “We are hopeful that this season the number of tourists will increase to one million. All our guest houses and resorts are full for two weeks,” said Khawaja Muhammad Awais, owner of a private guest house in the valley.
According to the local businessmen of Athmuqam, the boom in tourism across the valley is a good sign for the local economy that suffered a lot during the 1990 to 2000 when the Indian troops were spraying bullets to hit the area near the LoC.
“The road from Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam, the district headquarters of Neelum Valley, is good but onwards to Lower Neelum, Keran, Upper Neelum, Dawarrian, Sharda, Kel and Towbutt needs to be reconstructed to ensure safe travel,” said Mahnoor Akhter, a doctor from Lahore, who recently returned from a week-long vacation in the valley.

@Mehboob ... You are right my friend, we are not Azad. As my friend 'Stranger' said in th post above, 'They' - meaning 'Us' want to have our own homeland free and Nobody in J&K 'either Hindu or Muslim' wanted to be either with India or Pakistan. But the political people in those two countries played politics in the name of religion, as they have been doing, are doing and will keep on doing. And tore our beautiful state, like they did for their own countries. Now nothing can be done, we have to live with its consequences, the result of hate between people is always ugly, 'But' its always fear... that manipulates people, and hate is a good way to achieve it.
@Mehboob : Err ... way back some 6 decades ago they wanted Kashmir to be a seperate nation like Ind or Pak. Since the area of Kashmir is huge they wanted it to be soverign. Some people wanted to go to Ind and some to Pak. so the Pak part they called it AHK -Azad Hind Kashmir meaning the Hindus in Kashmir which was in Pak part but which wanted to be /deemed itself to be/ hope it would be eventually independent. I was there in 1984 and its jannat on zameen indeed ( like Akbar said )
I wonder why is Azad Kasmir is not ruled by Pakistan and why is it called Azad?
Wow I was in Jammu and Srinagar in 1984 with my family for our holiday . I was in high school then .Mashallah ! What scenery / what pretty girls/ what succulent transperent skin/ what tall good looking men and to top it what sumptuous food. The North of the sub continent is very pretty. Hope it comes back to normalcy soon and we can go on hols without looking behind our shoulder.
