MINGORA:

After the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won five provincial and two national assembly seats in Swat, locals have demanded two ministers be nominated from the district for the provincial cabinet.

Swat was awarded the Science & Technology, Forest and Environment, and Agriculture & Livestock ministries during the tenures of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and the Awami National Party (ANP).

“The people of Swat proved their love for the PTI and Imran Khan. Now we expect the same behaviour from the party’s top leadership in giving at least two ministries to our elected candidates,” said PTI Deputy General Secretary Dr Izzat Rehman.

Locals criticised previous governments for awarding ministries to the wrong people. “In the previous government, the ministry of Science and Technology was given to a person who did not even know how to spell its name. The case was the same with the Ministry of Forest and Environment,” claimed Murad Khan, a political science student.

A majority of Swat’s locals have very high expectations from the newly-elected PTI candidates as they seem disappointed with both the MMA and ANP governments. “We have high expectations from the PTI because Swat was badly affected, first by militancy and then by floods. Rehabilitation is only possible here if Swat candidates are given ministries,” said Ijaz Hamid, a civil engineer.
