The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) failed to arrange uninterrupted power supply on the eve of the historic polls and on Election Day itself, with outages witnessed in areas across the province, including the capital city.
On May 9, Pesco issued a statement claiming all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure uninterrupted power supply on May 10 and 11. The statement added all necessary equipment had also been provided Pesco sub-divisions and complaint centres, so that emergencies could be tackled promptly.
Pesco spokesperson Shaukat Afzal had stated power to all types of industries would be switched off in order to ensure electricity was provided to consumers. However, citizens in Peshawar and other areas of the province had to face power outages in stark contrast to the claims made by the electricity provision giant.
“We have learned never to believe such statements (of constant power supply),” said Javid Azhar, a resident of Gulbahar, adding many residents of Peshawar faced difficulties on the night of May 10. They even faced a tough time Election Day as power outages were witnessed in the morning and evening as usual, he added
Lal Sadiq, a resident of Karak, said the rural areas had been treated harshly in terms of electricity provision. “Election Day was no exception.”
