MULTAN:

Three labourers died on Thursday after they went into a manhole to clean a sewer.

Rescue officials said a Water and Sanitation Agency contractor, Malik Nasir, had hired three daily wagers- Allah Ditta and his sons Imran and Saleem- to clean a sewer line near BCG Chowk in Mumtazabad Colony near Bahawalpur bypass for Rs200 each.

They said a few minutes after Allah Ditta, 40, went down a manhole, he stopped answering back.

His sons Imran and Saleem then went in to rescue him. A passer-by later heard one of them shout for help and informed the Rescue 1122.

The bodies were pulled out after more than an hour and sent to a hospital for post-mortem examination.

The deceased were residents of Peer Addaywala.

District Coordination Officer Gulzar Hussain Shah has announced compensation for the bereaved family.

He has also ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, Wasa Managing Director Tayyab Chaudhry, too, has formed an inquiry committee headed by Deputy Director (Planning and Design) Saleem Shakir and sought a report in 48 hours.
