SUKKUR: For the first time in its history, Sukkur city now has an academy that provides complete courses for the preparation of the Central Superior Services (CSS) examinations.

“I started this academy called ‘The Nucleus’ last month and so far there are eight students studying in it,” Doctor Waseem Akbar, the founder of the academy told The Express Tribune.

Having two rooms, The Nucleus is established in a commercial complex at Queens Road.

“We teach them (students) English essay, art of presentation, writing skills, Pakistan affairs, current affairs and English grammar,” Dr Akbar said.

Inspired by his late father Akbar Ali, who was the prosecuting deputy superintendent of police, Dr Akbar successfully qualified the CSS exams in March 2008, after which he left for the US for masters in public health. He returned to Pakistan in June 2010,

“After qualifying the CSS exams, I had enough time until I leave for training in 2011, so I thought I can utilise it by providing proper guidance to the CSS candidates in my area. That is why I opened this academy.”

Dr Akbar regretted that most problems arise in the country because the youth are not guided properly and therefore they lack essential knowledge.

“It is my mission to guide the youth so that they can prove to be an asset for the country and a role model for others. I am hopeful that this academy will go a long way in providing better education and guidelines to the students.”

Riaz Ali, one of the students at the academy, said that he is studying for the CSS exams and also in the final year of LLB.

“I wanted to do something else, but my father inspired me to go for the CSS exams, he said, adding, “I joined this academy as soon as it opened and I am fully satisfied with the method of teaching here.”

Um-e-Hani, another student, said that she found out about this academy through an advertisement and immediately joined it.

“I have finished MSC from the Shah Abdul Latif University and now I am preparing myself to for the CSS exams. I am hopeful that I will qualify the exams in the first attempt,” said the veiled student confidently.

A few others also offer coaching classes for the CSS exams in the city, but they are not CSS-qualified and neither do they offer the whole range of courses.

One such teacher is Prof Ghulam Hussain Manganhar, who after his retirement from a government job in 2003, is now working on a contract basis with the Institute of Business Administration Sukkur, teaching English there.

Professor Manganhar has been running a private academy, offering English classes for the last 22 years, during which he claimed he has taught many students, some of them now appointed at high posts in the federal and provincial government departments.

“I am not CSS qualified, but I successfully help prepare students for the CSS exams and so far, more than 22 of my students are now enjoying good posts in the federal and provincial government departments,” he said.

“Earning money is not my motto, because I hail from a very poor family and God has helped me a lot. I want to share education, which is a blessing of God, with my students.”

Prof Manganhar’s students and colleagues say that the humble professor only charges Rs100 from each student that helps pay the rent for the tuition centre and its utility bill.

A similar academy is run by Professor Abdul Qayoom Mangi, who, like Prof Manganhar, is not CSS-qualified.

The academy only teaches English and does not help students prepare for the entire syllabus of the CSS exams.
