Worsening law and order: Four bombs defused across K-P

At least four bombs were defused by the bomb disposal squad (BDS) in Bannu, Mardan and Charsadda districts from Thursday night to Friday afternoon.


Bannu city police official Miranshah Khan said at around 8am on Friday a pedestrian informed police about a suspicious polythene bag lying near the boundary wall of Boys Government High School No 1. Police rushed to the site and cordoned off the area, while BDS official Masal Khan arrived at around 10am and defused the bomb.

Miranshah said the bomb weighed around three kilogrammes (kg) and comprised of ball bearings and shrapnel.

In another incident, a bomb was defused in Shabqadar tehsil of Charsadda. Police official Zaman Khan said they received a tip-off about a bomb planted near Shabqadar Bazaar.

Khan said police rushed to the area and began a search for the explosive device. Municipal committee workers were dumping garbage when they found a tin canister hidden in a heap of trash. They informed the police who called the BDS which reached the site and defused the 15 kg bomb.

Meanwhile, a low-intensity bomb weighing two kgs planted by the roadside in Sreekh area of Battagram was also defused by the BDS.   Separately, a bomb allegedly planted to target Awami National Party (ANP) activists in Mardan was successfully defused by the BDS late Thursday night.

Par Hoti police official Fazal Rabi said they were patrolling Sikandray area when they found an abandoned motorcycle parked at the roadside in Sarai Koruna where activists of ANP were convening a meeting for their election campaign.

Police called in the BDS which defused the explosive device, Rabi said, adding the bomb contained three kgs of explosives and 600 ball bearings and was packed in a silver canister.

Bank manager’s house targeted

A bomb planted near the house of a bank manager in Amirabad area of Charsadda exploded on Friday, damaging its boundary wall.

Mandani police official Rajab Ali said a huge explosion occurred near Khursheed Khan’s house at around 5:45pm. Police and BDS rushed to the site and cordoned off the area. The boundary wall of the house collapsed as a result of the explosion, Rajab added.

The official said two kilogrammes of explosives were used in the bomb, adding the house owner had no enmities.
