The state institutions should play their due role as human rights defenders rather than violators. This was the crux of a two-day consultative session organised by Ministry of Human Rights in collaboration with Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO).

There was consensus on a draft to address human rights issues by developing National Human Rights Policy Framework and National Human Rights Defenders’ Mechanism through a consultative process.

Ministry of Human Rights Director General Hassan Mangi opened the forum with the question about the roles and responsibilities of human rights defender. “We are accepting proactive, precarious, enabling environment for human rights defenders,” he said.

SPO Board of Directors Chairperson Dr Tufail Muhammad Khan, said that the consultation will primarily focus on the bridging of gaps in the existing human rights defender mechanism and to come up with a modified and abridged version of any global, regional or national practice.

The participants suggested a check and balance system to develop self accountability mechanism of the suggested task force committee. They also discussed the monitoring of human rights violations.
