Clean energy: KESC initiates efforts to procure hydropower for Karachi

KESC Management has been looking at different options to meet the long term power demand for the city of Karachi.

Press Release April 24, 2013

KARACHI:

Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) in compliance with its recently issued climate change policy to add renewable energy share into the mix, has started discussions with the Laraib Group, leaders of private hydropower projects in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir (AJK) with the aim of procuring power from the 640 MW Azad Pattan Project, and 250-300 MW Ashkot Hydropower Project currently at the feasibility stage. Both companies signed an MOU to closely cooperate in this regard.

KESC Management has been looking at different options to meet the long term power demand for the city of Karachi, including procurement of affordable power from upcountry hydropower projects and “wheeling” the electricity into Karachi under the multi-buyer and multi seller model envisaged under the power policies.
