Residents of Mattani have asked concerned authorities to provide more doctors and other staff at the Mattani hospital, saying the only healthcare institute in the area is facing a dire shortage of staff.
Protesting outside the Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, Youth Educational and Welfare Organisation Mattani (YEWOM) President Dr Teka Khan said the area has witnessed the highest number of terrorist activities, but the government has not paid attention to the lone hospital where all the victims are brought.
“When an incident occurs in Frontier Region Peshawar, Khyber Agency and Kohat, most of the injured die on the way to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) as the nearest hospital, Mattani hospital, cannot provide the required treatment due to lack of facilities and shortage of staff,” said Khan.
He added many posts of doctors are lying vacant, while technicians provide treatment in the out-patients department, which is not up to the standards. “We have been asking the higher authorities since two years, but no action has so far been taken in this regard.”
The residents also demanded the Peshawar High Court (PHC) chief justice take suo motu notice of the issue and either provide a 24-hour emergency service or shut down the institute.
