Unidentified persons ransacked the offices of the son of Chief Election Commissioner Fakharuddin G Ebrahim on Sunday.
According to Clifton SP Sarfaraz Nawaz, the incident occurred at the offices and reception area of former judge Tufail Ebrahim’s law firm, located at Clifton Block 2. He said the culprits ransacked the offices of Tufail and his associate, and stole the latter’s laptop, some cash and documents from the premises as well. The SP added, however, that the incident was in no way connected to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
According to sources, this was the first such robbery at the premises in several years.
Visiting the office, Deputy Commissioner South Mustafa Jamil Qazi endorsed Clifton police’s statement that the incident was nothing more than a robbery. Police have registered a case against the unidentified culprits.
Despite repeated attempts, no other police officer, apart from SP Clifton, was willing to give any further comments on the incident.
When contacted, ECP spokesperson Najeeb Ahmed maintained it was a personal matter of the CEC’s son and not an official case of the commission itself. He declined to comment further. Both CEC Ebrahim and ECP Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts till this story was filed.
Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso has taken serious notice of the reports of the disappearance of a laptop from the office of the CEC’s son in Karachi and has sought a report from the authorities concerned regarding the incident.
According to an official statement released on Sunday, PM Khoso also directed the Ministry of Interior and the provincial governments to beef up security and provide adequate protection to the ECP. The premier expressed concern over the attacks on the ECP office in Kalat and asked the Balochistan government to submit a comprehensive report in this regard as well.

The operative statement is: "this was the first such robbery at the premises in several years". It means they were expecting robberies to happen more frequently. Well done boys. You are really salt of the earth.
