ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Army will help supervise the printing of ballot papers for the upcoming general elections.

The process will begin on April 19 (Friday) and be completed by April 24, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The ECP has decided to deploy army troops at offices of the Printing Corporation Pakistan Press in Islamabad and Lahore and the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation in Karachi to supervise the printing of ballot papers, an ECP official told APP.

The army would provide security from the printing process to the distribution of the ballot papers.

The army confirmed the move, saying troops would be deployed Saturday night on security duty at three cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and places where ballot papers are being printed.       This was stated by a spokesperson of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.

On Thursday, army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani chaired a meeting of top commanders in Rawalpindi to discuss plans to provide security to the polls.

The polling for 272 general seats of the National Assembly and 577 seats of the four provincial assemblies will be held on May 11.
