PARACHINAR:

A Sikh family from Kurram Agency on Tuesday appealed to the government to take steps to recover a family member who was kidnapped two months earlier and whose whereabouts are still unknown.

Addressing a news conference at the Parachinar Press Club, Jaswant Singh said his only son Charan Singh was abducted on February 6 while he was on his way to Peshawar. Charan Singh, 40, has two sons and three daughters.

Jaswant said Charan had gone to the provincial capital to pay the customs duty on his vehicle. “His family has been traumatised since his disappearance and the authorities have not taken a single step to trace him,” said Jaswant, adding the agency has been their home even before the inception of Pakistan and they have never had such problems before.

He said that Christians, Hindus and other non-Muslim communities were also living in the agency peacefully and they have not faced any hostility from them.

The aggrieved father pleaded to the kidnappers to release his son on humanitarian grounds.

Due to the ongoing military and security operations in Tirah valley, Khyber Agency along with Orakzai and Kurram agencies, most of the Sikhs have migrated to settled areas with their families.

I feel for the aggrieved family. Unfortunately no one will help, neither the provincial nor the central government, nor indeed the establishment. Not only because they are not Muslims but because the state organs are incapable. The state has lost its writ. They have a better chance of recovery if they negotiate privately with the kidnappers.
