A month-old notification on the sale of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kicked in on Sunday, forcing a majority of CNG stations in the twin cities to shut down.
Most of the CNG stations in Rawalpindi and Islamabad had taken advantage of a stay order issued by the courts in mid-January to sell gas after they claimed the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) had forcibly disconnected their gas supply.
The stay orders for most CNG pumps in the twin cities expired over the weekend.
This meant stations had to fall back on a new gas load management schedule released by the government before its term ended on March 16, said Ghayas Paracha, chairman of the All Pakistan CNG Association.
He said under the new schedule, pumps are only allowed to sell CNG from Monday to Wednesday.
Some stations, which still have their stay orders in effect, did sell CNG on Sunday.
CNG supply will resume at most stations on Monday morning, Paracha said.
