Dasti was arrested in the court premises and was shifted to a jail amid strict security. The former MNA was also handed a penalty worth Rs5,000.
Dasti announced that his brother will now contest from his constituency in the upcoming general elections.
His lawyers said that they will move the high court against Dasti's disqualification.
He held a press conference in Multan on Wednesday where he announced his decision of not contesting the upcoming elections.
He had said that no one from his family will contest the elections against the “feudal system” of the country.
The former MNA has been persistent that his degree is real. He holds the arguments that if he had fake degree and was disqualified on the premise in 2009, then why was he allowed to contest the by-elections in 2010.
He was elected from the Muzaffargarh NA-178 constituency in the 2008 elections and again through subsequent by-elections.

@Noman Hafeez: Kisi haal mein khush nahi. Nothing is good enough for this nation... nothing!
great step to get rid of fake representative....
A Fake Degree holder can get punishment so quick and fast and what about the others politicians who are sucking the blood of this poor nations many many years ago and contesting in this election again to suck rest and last drop of the poor nation once again. Who will decide to punish them and when???????
It's not enough. Their properties should also be confiscated.
Now here we find the ystem of local govts neccessary. MNA's and MPA's should be graduates because they have to do lawmaking where as all other decveloment funds should be given to local govts whose representatives are not bound to be graduates. But ths feudal mindset has not allowed the local govts to nurture.SHAME
@Akhtar: Should be thirty yrs solitary confinement and confiscation of his assets .
He lied to the nation, under oath. He deserves to be jailed. Period.
I dont know why but i feel realy bad for Jamshed Dasti.
@Fazal karim:
Education is not for elites .. now a days almost every one tries to obtain a degree of some sort for better future. If a parliamentarian can not read or write how can that person make laws for the 180 million population? At least this will make them give better education to their children if nothing more.
Well deserve for dasti
this is not justice why he 3year in sentence and others like ministers sentence to one year this is not justice im not supporter of ppp ,,im supporter of justice give equal justice
@Jawad: By Reputation Jamshed dasti was a true representative of the locals unlike most feudals. He was a rare politician who worked for his regional people. I am vehemntly against corrupt politicians but this man probably did not deserve a three year sentence.
How many graduates are there as compared to total population of pakistan? Majority people are being discriminated here. They cannot go into parliament and serve the country because they are not elite. Minority rule, is this the face of democracy in pakistan?
@dasmir: Please log off from the internet and go away.
Sardar Jamshed khan Dasti is a great leader.I salute Mr Jamshad khan dasti. He sent him to court through a plan. When leaders cannot do something they should takesuch decision. I always salute jamshad dasti because he is against fudelism.
I m waiting for loan defaulters and commission mafia and other criminals behind the bars too.
@dasmir: It's one of the rare best law of Pakistan ... Assemblies are there make law for the country which illiterate politicians cannot do and when they try to make a law it's always flawed .. Why should a Phd holder, a doctor, an engineer or a scientist be made to follow a law that was made by people who has never seen face of a college and a law that is as stupid as a box of rocks?
It is really sad that these people came to this juncture, degree should have never been a requirement for election purposes, I am not condoning their behavior but decks were stacked against them in the first place by a military dictator.Just having a degree does not mean a person is educated and on the other hand a person not having a degree could be highly intelligent and qualified for all sorts of jobs.Just look at Microsoft founder Bill Gates, by the way I have two masters degrees from reputable Kansas universities but that does not make me better than any one else who has not been to college for any reason. Unfortunately we in Pakistan are not raised to be honest and respect others rights regardless of their social status, to me any one who works and make an honest living is a respectable person even if they are at the lowest rung of social status. It seems that Mr.Dasti was likable person in his constituency and was helping those who sent him to the Assembly but unfortunately he succumbed to a bad judgment and paying the price for it. I still think that these people should be given parole instead of jail term and should be disqualified for few elections, there are those who has looted the treasury with billions and they are living a comfortable life in Pakistan, Dubai, London, Paris and New York and some of them has been saying in your face and some has even embezzled funds from the pilgrims, how low these people could get.
Whats the case here?If Pakistan requires their members of assembly and parliament to hold degrees or even SSC ,then it is a superb standard which even we in India, being almost 7 times better than Pak in all respects, have to learn from it and salute Pak for it!!
Mr Dasti this country does not deserve honest and hard working politician like yourself. You made your politics to serve and help people when everyone around you were busy making billions. I praise you for your work and dedication and leave you with this quote from Martin Luther King Jr, "One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law". You broke an unjust law that disenfranchise hundreds of millions poor pakistanis and I salute for this.
Great news. Now he can run for president.
What is the punishment for law breaker musharaf??
May be election commission should investigate allegations of ball tempring against Imran Khan He is the inventer of swing tactics Also nawaz shareefs credibility re his agreement with Musharaf and later lying about it
Quick justice....what about Musharraf?
Long awaited but 5000 penalty is not enough for these culprits
Well Done
A country of Pakistan's literacy ,it is cruel joke that only a degree holder can go to Parliament. This provision of ECP should be challanged on the ground of discremination against people of Pakistan!
Good decision by the court. He is not a real degree holder. He doesn't even passed his matric exam. It's time for CHANGE!
OK fine, punish those who submitted fake degrees. But what about those officials who were sitting in ECP at the time of last elections and cleared the nomination papers of all the fake degree holders.
This is a good decision but I have mixed feelings. Jamshed Dasti clearly lied about his degree so he should be prosecuted, however he was a person from a poor background who has openly stood up against the fuedals of the area. The people of his constituency supported him for that. There was a general feeling that he would beat hina khar in the elections. However he should be prosecuted. But the real test is if sheikh waqas akram also gets prison sentence, because if he doesnt then it would again be case of poor being subjected to justice while the rich are let off.
By the same standards the dual nationality holders should be equally liable for punishment. When will they be punished?
Great work by Judiciary. All cheaters and looters must be barred to become MNA, MPA, Senator or govt. employee. If this not done now, then public will be on roads to achieve justice.
Wel done! 6 gone, 83 more to go.
Pakistan: This seems to be on the face of it a positive move, condemning the fake degree holders to jail, but what it does effectively is give the khars open run at Muzaffargarh NA-178 constituency. Dasti apparantly did some good work for the locals and delivered where feudal khars failed over a long period of time.
P.S. in other news interm sindh government gave holiday on the death annivarsary of bhutto.. FREE AND FAIR, people, free.. and ..fair!!!
The tiredness I had during my last 16 to 17 years of education period is being off by hearing these news ! Dil garden garden ho jata hai !
Deserved. Do that to all fake degree holders.
Deserved!
That's awesome. Now other can realise as well they can't do these kind of things. And at least courts start working. Good
He was very handy for the locals of his area, I have heard good things about him. But this is justice, if you are elected having fake degree, you should be punished.
How come he be not educated when has a pen in his pocket? I mean why carry a pen if cant use it? LOL..
Sheikh Akram Waqas and other fake degree holders need to be handed down jail sentences as well, we need consistency. Otherwise it will once again prove that these are Nawaz Sharif's courts.
Great, regardless of the party, all of fake degree holders deserve their sentences
