DERA ISMAIL KHAN:

Sixty-two personnel of the levies force of tehsil Toi Khulla, Wana, South Waziristan have returned their weapons and uniforms to the agency’s political administration over their alleged mistreatment at the hands of the latter.

Asghar Khan Dottani, one of the officials who resigned, said 59 personnel from Dottani tribe and three from Sulaiman Khel tribe collectively decided to hand over their weapons and uniform to the administration.

“We perform our duty in spite of the difficult law and order situation in Waziristan. However, the political administration always mistreats us,” he told The Express Tribune.

Asghar said he had been in the force for the last six months, but had only been provided with one uniform cap and a belt, while he had to buy the rest of the clothes himself.

Only 24 Kalashnikovs were provided for the 62 levies from both tribes, Asghar added.

The issue of collective resignation arose after salaries of these personnel for the month of March were withheld by the political administration under the collective responsibility clause.

Three personnel had gone on leave sanctioned by Assistant Political Officer Hamidullah Khattak. However, when they returned to their posts two days later than scheduled, the rest of the force was also punished.

An official of the political administration confirmed the resignations, but claimed the issue was temporary and the administration was capable of solving it.
