It is a time of scrutiny for all former members of the provincial and national assembly as the time for general elections comes closer.
Earlier on Tuesday, another former MPA Khalifa Abdul Qayyum was sentenced to three years in jail along with a Rs5,000 penalty on the premise of a fake degree.
Having a graduation degree is no more a legal requirement to participate in elections, but anyone who is proved of having forged in the past stands disqualified to take part in the elections.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, three of the country’s top institutions – State Bank of Pakistan, National Accountability Bureau and Federal Board of Revenue – will screen candidates’ backgrounds for criminal conviction, loan default, tax evasion and other financial irregularities.

Dual nationality does not mean disloyalty. Dual nationals from China, India, South Korea have acted as a bridge for trade and cultural exchange between the West and their countries of birth.I suggest, that political offices in Pakistan should be tied to the “residency” status for those who were born in Pakistan. If someone has a UK passport, but he/she is living in Pakistan for say 5 years (or whatever limit there is), have not committed a crime, worked with an employer, or ran a business, and paid taxes, then he should not be barred from taking part in the country’s politics.
Its a good beginning but please check all the Government Officials because they are also the part of the Law. I cannot hear even a single name of any bureaucrat................in this regard. If there is any Law exist than use for each and every person otherwise change the Law.......
Rs. 5000? Isn't that too much?!
The saying goes, when there is a Will there is a Way.
and in Pakistan when there is a "Fear" there is a "will" and the "way" afterwards :P...
The fear of monitoring will strict all the polticians to keep themselves away from the corruption in Future. This is just a small start, the list is very long, mass convictions are needed.
I felt very happy, by wtaching a TV show last night, in which all the politicians were near to cry by saying why "DEGREE - DEGREE" hahaha one of them was saying this is injustice, i have a True degree, but they declared it FAKE. my Dear "True Degree politician" Now you understand how a common man feels when you reject the poeple on merit ??
Musharaf has done many things wrong, But 1 thing superb and that is the introducttion of Degree requirement in the constituition. hahaha
Very very happy now , Keep growing and keep glowing my Pakistan.
It is a revolution in Pakistan without blood shed. We proud of our Judiciary.
Still a long way to go Pakistan! Keep it up
A good beginning is being made in Pakistan`s history due to the unflinching support assured by SC to the ECP.....great...keep up the pressure....cleanse the society of such garbage....
The case involved Dual Nationality issue, but the news article is not clear whether Mr. Tarakai was convicted and sentenced for holding dual nationality or for holding a fake degree.
