Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had announced Rs0.5 million in compensation for each of those affected in the mob attack. However, the 265 cheques distributed by the government have bounced.
According to reports, the finance ministry had issued the amount promised. When the cheques bounced, the victims started protesting.
On March 9, an over 3,000-strong mob had set ablaze more than 150 houses of Christians in the Joseph Colony over alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by Sawan Masih, a 28-year-old Christian sanitation worker.

Looting and burning the houses first and then trying to cover the crime by another shameful act of giving aid will not heal the wounds of the Christians. We are going through a very ironic pain. Every now and then, our leaders are killed, our houses are attacked and burnt. Our girls are abducted and forced to conversion. The black legislation of 295-C is used to settle personal scores and confiscate our lands and property. We have always made Pakistan strong and prosperous by serving in health, education, military, civil services and politics; but Pakistan has given us nothing but smoldering ruins of Churces and homes and bleeding bodies of our sons and brothers. Pakistan should know that Christian youth is getting reswtless ad we are near to breaking of nerves point. There has already started talks of arranging our own security as the government has failed completely to protect us. In Punjab especially, Pro Taliban government of PML(N) should stop supporting, financing and using the Islamic Militants for its own mean motives. All the political forces of Pakistan should stand together and resolute to curb religious violence and militancy. Unfortunately no political party has announced anything on how it is going to provide protection to Christians and other minority communities
Looting and burning first and then trying to cover the crime by distributing cheques will be no solution to the pain and agony, the Christians of Pakistan are going through. The pro Taliban Punjab Government of PML(N) should stop supporting, financing and using the Islamic militants for its own mean motives.
Blasphemy law is a curse for religious minorities. All political forces should be resolute to repeal it.
I am glad their government took action to provide for the needs of these victims. Now they need to step it up and prosecute the criminals who did this. Those are the people who should be writing checks.
@Faiza (@Faiza_PK): LOL lameee.........
If the cheques distributed did in fact clear then why is PML N so silent on this utterly irresponsible journalism?
It is really disappointing tribune team is not working on the reporting guidelines. All the cheques for the Joseph colony has been cleared on 11th march. It seems tribune team is being sponsored for making rumors against PMLN. I request the editors to pay formal apology on this false news.
Who nicked the money from the bank?
All cheques issued to Josaph colony, were credited by March 13. Its time for some responsible reporting. Otherwise kindly come out, and openly admit that you're running an election campaign for some opponent party. Thank you!
entire budget wasted on metro bus and laptops,,this is called investment to attract voter strategy.
The PML-N members treated it as a booty and emptied the account, before the victims could go to the banks.
Utterly disgraceful. Rubbing salt on wounds (not that money is the solution)
Finance ministry under new Caretaker govt should sort things out and pay compensation promised to the victims at the earliest.
Non-existent governance! Do they have any shame??
Hum nai badla hai punjab! Hum Badlain gain Pakistan!
