Winning elections requires appropriate electoral strategies. Political leaders and parties devise strategies according to the social structures, the political culture and in light of ethnic, demographic and caste and clan characteristics of the society. At the centre of the electoral strategies, both in mature democracies as well as in emerging democracies like ours, are the voting blocs. The social and cultural differences in different societies generate various sets of voting blocs.
While women, ethnic minorities, religious groups, blue collar workers and the old and the young may constitute voting blocs in the industrial democracies, in ours it is the caste, sub-tribe and the dynastic, influential political families with large landholdings that matter. Our old-pragmatic politics focuses more on the social characteristics and influence patterns of the electoral constituencies than on national issues. This is the logic and compulsion of local contestations among the traditional political elites.
The major political parties — the PML-N and the PPP — have been in fierce competition for decades now to win over the dynastic families and through them, access the larger voting blocs of castes and village communities. How do the dynastic political families make their political choices? A good number of them have stayed with one or another political party through good and bad times. Strong party affiliation is a mark of positive political development in Pakistan that will eventually produce a two-party system. However, as is evident from recent defections from both the PML-N and the PPP — more in numbers from the latter — the dynastic families have their own sense of political pragmatism. It is the power question that impels them to affiliate with or defect from a political party. They create a stampede at the doors of a party if they feel it is likely to win and form the next government. So it is the principal of power and not the virtue of public good or any programme of positive change that keeps the political families making odious political deals.
The question to debate is, will pragmatic politics win again or lose in the face of the challenge of new politics? What is this new politics I am referring to? It is the politics of change through the political mobilisation of the people and the building of a national coalition of social groups to rise and vote against the dynastic political parties — mainly the PPP and the PML-N. This is what the Kaptaan and his PTI wish to achieve in the next elections. I believe with his optimism, personal charisma and faith in the ability of the common man, the Kaptaan has rocked the dreamboat of traditional, dynastic politics. If the PTI emerges even as a third party, and even if it is not able to form the next government at any level, the politics of Pakistan will have changed forever, and for the better.
In a hung parliament, which is not unlikely, the PTI will play hardball rather than the role of a kingmaker. Its presence in the assemblies will put tremendous pressure on other parties to do better for the country than they have. It will constitute a democratic revolution if the PTI captures first or second position. Even at third, the Kaptaan will be just one stop short of winning Pakistan.

@sabi: Dear Imran Khan is the only leading politician facing direct questions and answering in the best possible way, all other are nothing in front of him in this respect. Please note that his aims are so high that only a visionary leader like him can set for himself and his nation. As a gifted person, he believes that one can achieve whatever one can imagine, something beyond the understanding of commoners.
Pragmatic analysis. The fear PTI has created in the ranks of status quo is worth watching. The very nature of Pak politics has changed forever (after 30 October 2011). Let's see whether the nature of Pak governence changes or not ...
@Ricky: Thanks for making me laugh out loud..."Both maligned political parties PML-N and PPP have made Pakistan their home and have fully settled here. They win elections because they lead by examples not with their elite lifestyles."
@Ricky. Are you even serious when you claim PMLn and PPP have led by example? Secondly, Imrah khan has been the only national level leader who had been in Pakistan during good and bad times. Rest all have the record of running away from this country in difficult times.
Good Analysis of Dr. Rasool Bakhs. I agree that if PTI stands at 3rd position even it will ultimately shake the foundation of dynastic politics.
@Ricky IK has never claimed to be one of the people but he has ALWAYS been FOR the people
A strong showing by the PTI is essential since it would be a much need shock to the established parties that they can not depend on their existing vote banks indefinetly without showing performance
So even if PTI does not win a single seat but if it is able to place 2nd or 3rd in a majority of the contested seats the other parties will have to perform in the 2013 - 2018 period just to ensure that PTI does not win in the 2018 election cycle
On the other hand if the PTI wins a good number of seats and sits in the opposition they can clearly make life uncomfortable for the ruling coalition as well the opposition leadership hence forcing both to perform in their respective roles
Either way PTI's influence will be positive for democracy as well as the people
Its all about politics and power. No revolution, no change. We have to understand the dynamics of power in all modern democracies, from US to India. People are to vote, and politicians are to rule. It's human nature. With power, a human becomes a monster. He bombs poor civilians, kills unarmed demonstrators. All in the name of country and law.
People vote them hoping for a change. They become excited. They consider them to be the last hope. But as they come in power, they are promoted onto another level. At this level, they fight with each other. They fight with other countries, ignoring what people need. Sometimes, they give peanuts to people so that their hope does not dies away. And they stay calm.
This is what the democracy is. Government of inherently faulty people.
Pakistani voter lacks the wisdom to vote for PT. Sad, but a revolution in Pakistan will not come peacefully.
This is an infomercial for the lifetime "Kaptan" of Pakistan and PTI. Yet you hope he is going to go against family dictatorships on the other parties. The Kapatan has never led by example in his life as a common Pakistani man. His elitist lifestyle has been his biggest enemy and not too many Pakistanis can relate to him. You have asked few questions about the next elections. Elections are screening process and the ultimate report card of political parties. Not many people had related themselves with PTI and IK in the past and not a whole lot has changed. Both maligned political parties PML-N and PPP have made Pakistan their home and have fully settled here. They win elections because they lead by examples not with their elite lifestyles. In one elections most of your questions would not be answered. It took India over 40 years and many elections and China a couple of decades to start making real economic progress. Those who talk about sudden change are not telling the truth.
Spectacular article Sir! PTI is the only party that is able to hold dynastic and feudal parties accountable. It is a party based on a National Movement. I would go further and explain why PTI members so aggressively defend PTI and the Kaptaan. . It is because PTI is based on a national movement, and the party image is everything. It does not have the capital, monetary depth or feudal/dynastic influence to buy constituencies, or winning candidates. PTI's image is it's only true asset. And to attack that image means an attack on the idealogy of the party (yes, PTI is the only idealogical party). Hence, my fellow cynics, please don't get offended when you level unwarranted criticism on PTI. Most of your complaints have been satisfied anyway eg. IK's speaking clearly against terrorism, internal elections, tickets to youths.
Sir you are right. Metro bus and laptops to students are because of Kaptan's presure. otherwise PMLN ruled 20 years before this term on lahore
PTI politicle philosphy is based on imaginary world like utopia and that is the reason it can not withstand cross quetioning.
Bravo Professor Sahab. You nailed it. Emergence of PTI is good for Pakistan, regardless of whether it wins or loses.
