Empowerment: ‘Govt protecting women rights’

Women parliamentarians have a great opportunity to protect the rights of women from the parliamentary forum.

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Prime Minister, Shahnaz Wazir Ali has said that the government is fully committed to ensure the women rights and give them protection through legislation in parliament.

Talking to Pakistan Television, Shahnaz Wazir Ali said that the women parliamentarians have a great opportunity to protect the rights of women from the parliamentary forum. She said the government passed harassment bill from parliament and also got implemented in workplaces to protect the working women. Replying to a question, she said the government has legislated to protect women from enforced marriage and bestowed them the right of the property, according to the constitution. She added that democratic government has strengthened the National Commission for Women Status (NCWS) to empower the women, especially from rural areas. She said that in Pakistan a woman was twice elected as prime minister and presently the speaker of National Assembly and the foreign minister are women which is a rare example in the Islamic world.
