PESHAWAR:

The lawyers of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) will boycott court proceedings and observe March 9 (today) as a black day.

Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) General Secretary Qazi Jawad said on Friday the strike has been called by the K-P Bar Council, and PHCBA will endorse the decision and boycott court proceedings.

He said a black day will be observed as Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was unconstitutionally deposed on this day in 2007. “However, he never bowed before the unconstitutional decision of the dictator, former president Pervez Musharraf,” added Jawad.

“He (Justice Chaudhry) was asked by Musharraf to leave office, but he never did and said no, which led to the lawyers’ movement,” said Qazi, terming the current independent judiciary an outcome of the lawyers’ struggle.
