MQM Coordination Committee member Raza Haroon, while addressing a second press conference on Wednesday, said, "Upon hearing appeals made by traders, transporters, business owners, members of school associations and many others, the MQM has taken back its decision to keep businesses closed for an indefinite period of time."
Haroon reiterated that his party will continue their protest until their demands regarding the arrests of the perpetrators and compensation to the victims of the Abbas Town blast are met.
The MQM member reiterated that despite the cancellation of the strike call, the party had not compromised on its demands.
Afternoon strike call
Raza Haroon had said earlier, “After extensive negotiations and meetings, MQM has decided to observe a peaceful movement against the government’s inefficiency.”
Addressing a press conference in the afternoon, Raza Haroon said that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain had condemned the Abbas Town blast and had demanded the government arrest the terrorists involved within three days, otherwise, the MQM will observe a democratic protest.
"Although government promised immediate action, they did nothing except drama," he added.
Condemning the government’s incompetence, Haroon said that this protest movement will continue till government arrests the culprits responsible for the attack.
“We appeal to the people of Karachi to stay peaceful and support the peaceful protest," he said, before adding, "We request the people of Karachi, especially traders, factory owners, shop keepers, transporters and people belonging to other walks of life, to keep their businesses shut until the terrorists are arrested.”
He added that providing compensation to the victims of the attack and their rehabilitation was the responsibility of the government, but so far the government has done nothing except for promises, that were never kept.
Talking about the present situation of Karachi, he said that rumours are being spread in the city to spread panic. “We strongly condemn all such actions to sabotage our peaceful movement,” he said, referring to incidents of violence as the city shut down.
Understanding difficulty of businesses
Haroon said the MQM was cognisant of the pressure faced by the business community, traders and daily wage earners that strikes bring.
"They will face a lot of difficulty in the wake of these strikes; however, this is the only way to make the government realise and to stop the terrorism from spreading."

Always looking for an excuse to show themselves as mazloom. They have got no iota of shame left.Again they will go to the voters by using flimsy slogans and use arm twisitng tactics to woo the people.
5 years with the PPP is not going to be easy for the MQM to explain ? Their credibility apparently is badly dented.
The killings of Shias in Karachi cannot be justified as a reaction to the killing of Ulema in Karachi. But the Karachi terrorists should be caught and brought to justice to protect Ulema in Karachi and all terrorists everywhere must be brought to justice. The Army deserves to be brought in.
@Mohsin: Face saving before going to the voters?
@Muhammad Rizwan Ali: IK has almost begged people of Karachi for the umpteenth time that please please don't vote parties with militant wings in the next elections, what more do you want him to do?
@Muhammad Rizwan Ali: I hope you know the real culprits, dont you?
@Muhammad Rizwan Ali: You keep voting the Educated Middle Class politicians and keep blaming the PML-N and PTI?
5 years of coalition and now they're protesting. They should have thought earlier. This massacre has been happening for years now.
and the latest news is rangers started targeted operation in different parts of Lyari!
Lucky for us that its a peaceful strike, otherwise there would have been 100 dead by now.
PMLN, PTI, only busy in Elections no inrest in karachi or Sind situations But will come to get Votes People should remember
What happens to to the families of daily wage earners. Furthermore even if one has cash will the bakeries and tandoors open for bread!
One benefit (if I can say so) we can get out of bleak situation is to learn proper and effective way to protest. What is the point of shutting down businesses and life? some people lost their lives and livelyhood due to blast, and the rest will lose their earnings due to strikes? Do they really thing that the govt care about loss of national revenue? especially in the last 10 days of their 'brilliant tenure'!
Why not use resources in rehablitation, pursing prosecution of the criminals, setup volunteers to gaurd against future attacks and everyday street crimes.
No medicine, petrol, business, education not to mention no work for starving daily wages labour or any other important activity WOW! what a peaceful way to help victims.
Yes, we support the Indefinite shutdown... ask any business owner in karachi, or shop owner, they are sick and tired of the daily bhatta and harassment. Please shut down until the government wakes up and actually does something. We have to end this once and for all.. Indefinite shutdown is the only way.
How is shutting the city down, stopping education and businesses functioning going to encourage the govt to arrest the culprits?
This is sheer stupidity.
Our govt needs to send in the army. Karachi is bleeding, and it needs its army now!

Looks like the same kind of "peaceful strikes" they used to observe in 1994-95. Who says history never repeats itself?
