ISLAMABAD:
Chairman National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) Habib Ullah Khilji has tendered his resignation amid the deepening energy crisis in the country.
Khilji was appointed acting chairman three months ago as a stop-gap arrangement. Sources said he sent his resignation to the establishment division. However, no official confirmation was made.
The resignation comes following the nationwide power outage on February 24, plunging 70% of the country into darkness. There were also differences when certain Nepra members refused to accept Khilji’s appointment back in November 2012. He was representing Sindh in the authority at the time. They said the appointment was against the rules. When contacted, Nepra spokesman Safeer Hussain said he was unaware of the development. Khilji himself did not provide any information despite repeated attempts.
Secretary establishment division Taimur Azmat did not provide any explanation either.
Under the Nepra Act, the authority consists of a chairman and 4 members, one from each province. It states that the members’ appointment will be made by the federal government after considering the recommendations of the respective provincial governments. The chairman is appointed for a period four years.
