Criminal justice system: Speakers demand drastic reforms
The participants emphasised on provision of better healthcare and counselling facilities to the prisoners.
ISLAMABAD:
Speakers at a conference underlined the need for drastic reforms in the existing Criminal Justice System. The conference titled “Criminal Justice Reform in Pakistan-Developing Alternative to Prison” was organised on Thursday by the Dost Welfare Foundation (DWF), a non-governmental organisation. The participants including Inspector General Prisons K-P Khalid Abbas, Dr Parveen Azam Khan, Chief Executive of DWF and experts from KP, Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh were present on the occasion. Abbas said that jails throughout the country were overcrowded. He urged the government to provide employment opportunities to such persons so that they could earn an honourable living once they were out of jail. The participants emphasised on provision of better healthcare and counselling facilities to the prisoners. They also stressed on implementation of Juvenile Justice System Ordinance, 2000.
