Haq had earlier opposed the setting up of a government university in a statement while speaking at the convocation of Sindh University on Saturday. He had said that he will not allow the setting up of a University in Hyderabad city and would stand against any such efforts.
The statement by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) parliamentary party leader evoked a severe response from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
A shutter down strike was observed in Hyderabad following the Sindh Minister’s opposition to the setting up of university in Hyderabad.
Trade centers and business houses remained closed in Hyderabad, while demonstrations were also seen in some parts of Karachi.
Even the Hyderabad Anjuman Tajiran supported MQM and the shops and trade centers were closed across the city this morning.
The city dwellers condemned the statement given by Haq.
Police and rangers were nowhere in sight while protestors blocked roads and torched tyres in different parts of the city.

@Sarosh: For progress of Sindh, make it a separate country!
@Sindhi_Awam: so who to blame? you sounds like blaming Karachites or MQM its a lame excuse, Running away from hard work is a way of living, First of all whatever seats Interior Sindh have in Karachi are from Quota system not on merit so I am even against that, work for it dude!!! Secondly if you are waderay ka baita you would be studying in some private institute and using your influence to get passed!!! Thirdly please blame your Representatives who DEPRIVED you from Education Why there cant be any single World Class university, schools and colleges in interior Sindh at all!! aks them?,Those feudal who don't like to see university in Hyderabad are the same people who don't wana see Educated Poor and Middle Class, Those who can challenge them WADERA dont like challenges.
soliution for Quota vs Merit in Sindh = Make Karahi+ Hyderabad anothe prrovince
@Bukhari baba: See who is talking! hahahahaha..the supporters and benefisheries of quota system now say that they were not given admission on the basis of domicile!!
@Sindhi_Awam: I agree with both parties are in collation for five years now in last weeks they start to fight for university. Is it not very strange. Or it is normal political business going on
I don't know when Sindhi brothers stop using Sindhi card and get mature, after East Pakistan separation they were first to change their province language to Sindhi and they first to cut the tongue of Urdu speaking people back 1973.PPP completed five years with cooperation of MQM and now PPP Sindhi MPs has started dirty game.Maturity is seldom seen in our politicians.
Thats why ordinary sindhis are still living in stone age. Sindhi leadership dont want education for ordinary sindhis and want to keep their own people in darkness. People getting university places through quota system are never be able to compete anyone on merit. Sindhis can only work in govt offices but in private sector majority of sindhis cannot get any place on merit. Please stop blaming others for your own failure.
@ Sindhi Awam, Truth is that in rivalry of urdu-speaking community you are supporting fool politicians (either they belong to ppp or quom-parast parties),These politicians only knows how to shine their politics, they neither want development of rural areas of Sindh nor of urban areas.Instead they want to eradicate urban population of Sindh and to capture all their resources...
universities in interior sind are nothing but bulk degree producing industries without any standards. A graduate from renowned universities of interior may not be able to compete a primary student of urban areas or Punjab but they are eligible for all jobs and ultimately hold public offices merely due to quota and degree combination. this is sheer disappointment of urban areas were talent tis wasted for nothing.they need to hire good faculty and improve educational standards
Both MQM and PPP are playing dirty politics at the cost of the harmony in the city of Hyderabad. Poor citizens of Hyderabad/Latifabad who were lured by MQM into its fold in late 80s with the promise of a City University and abolishment of Quota System are still empty handed. They are still empty handed because MQM is not sincere with them. If in Karachi they could have the status of Dow Medical College elevated to University and establish Nazir Hussain University besides doing multitude of work then was it a hurculous task to get a Public Sector University established in Hyderabad. No it was not specially in that era when there was no Mazhar ul Haq to stand a an iron wall against their moves. The time period of Musharraf era. The fact is people of Hyderabad understands that this politics is meant to keep them deprived so that these politicians keep playing old game when the reality is that those educational institutions that are located in the MQM dominated areas of Hyderabad like City College, Ghazali College (Latifabad) and many others are there nothing but their political bases where MQM members rule. So please stop becoming the champions of the cause of education for Hyderabad and Pir Sahab please stop playing politics and dont destroy Hyderabad's peace.
what he means is " we will not develop rural sindh and make every effort to bring urban sindh down if they try to do some constructive work".
Peace Peace my dear fellow men the enemies are taking full advantage of these bickering, hold your breath and unite against the enemy.Vote fearlessly for a better PAKISTAN.PUSH THEM INTO THE GUTTERS.
Thanks God, no quota system in Punjab
@Sindhi_Awam: Well you should thank Z.A Bhutto for the division of Sindh on the basis of Urban and Rural population.
@Sindhi_Awam: I think the irony is that Sindhis have these sort of leaders who refuse setting up universities in other parts of Sindh and sadly the Sindhi awam tends to lap it up. Bhutto spoilt the Sindhi people by implementing the quota system in Sindh, killing merit in the process. Instead of blaming others for their woes, perhaps it is time the Sindhis did a bit of soul searching. Decisions like the opposition to Kalabagh Dam, the threats of violence against the division of Sindh and following their waderas blindly has left interior Sindh as a backwater. The bitter fact is that Sindhis have absolutey taken no part in the progress of Sindh. Even Karachi was developed and turned into a mega city by non Sindhis. Perhaps they need to learn a bit from their Mohajir and Punjabi counterparts.
@Sindhi_Awam: So you saying that there should not be university in Hyderabad?
His statement was taken completely out of context he was referring to the conspiracy university was being planned to counter the Sindh university of which he referred that he would not allowed that university, watch the whole speech... http://videos.geo.tv/VideoGallery.aspx?ID=10452
@Sindhi_Awam: What your sindhi nationalist and sindhi PPP did for you? Just making quota and killing the merit? Instead of opening new universities in interior Sindh you and your leaders whining about seats in Karachi's universities. Can you tell me why there are only 125 seats for 2.5 million Hyderabad people in Mehran University? And can you tell me how can you compete with your average grades of 50-55% to average grades of 75% of Karachiites and get admission in Karachi?
Those who get good grades in Interior Sindh gets admission in Karachi Universities, so stop whining about this thing and ask your nationalists and PPP to make new universities in Interior and get brave and eliminate quota system so that world can see who can compete on merit
@ Sindhi_Awam and what would you say about urdu speaking students were beaten in Jamshoro university......Go check the fact first and talk....I have many sinshi friends who leaves in Karachi and study in Karachi's institute and doing a good jobs and can you tell me how many of Karachi student can do this in interior sindh.
More universities to award bogus degrees to corrupt politicians. Hurray!
@Sindhi_Awam: so is the same for karachi students who cannot get admission in colleges and uni. of interior sind , this is bad policy every one from the whole province be given fair chance to gain admission which ever college or university he or she desires , fullfilling the required merit. What does it matter if a student was a resident of interior sindh and wish admission in a college of karachi. The whole thing has become so complex and useless in promotion of education , only if in sindh we had observered a policy that is practised in punjaab , that opem merit to all , and no restriction due to place of residence. We find this in Aga khan university karachi , it allowes applications from whole of pakistan and according to strict merit provides places. What does it matter if majority of places in a college filled by students who resides in one district and are admitted thru merit , if they are given places on academic excellence they would be most beneficial for the future of our country in giving professinal and skilled work force
It is just a flop drama between PPP-MQM. Using baseless issues to cry foul. On other hand, The doors of Sindhi students are close in Karachi universities, many civil society people cried for this but never this education minister took any serious action. What an irony that people cant study in their own capital city, their own land!
