The passengers were on their way to a wedding from Samarbagh, Peshawar.
Rescue officials have managed to pull 15 passengers out of the water and shifted them to a nearby hospital.
According to rescue workers, around 35 people were on board, including women and children, when it fell into the canal.
Jameel Shah, an official at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital also confirmed the accident and casualties, saying that those killed in the crash included eight women and four children.
Rescue work to recover other passengers is underway.

May Allah protect us all, no good news these days. Target killing, bombs, drones and when there is relative peace, we get these sorts of accidents. It is testing time for us as a nation!
Very sad. The easiest way to avert such tragedies is to have some kind of a radio help in each boat. I know its easier said than done . With the help of such radios, the stranded passengers can call people at the river banks.
