Security forces killed another two Taliban commanders of the Swat chapter during an operation in the Khawaza Khela tehsil, official sources said on Thursday.
The slain commanders were identified as Commander Abdul Basir and Samiullah. Basir, a high-profile Taliban commander, had been nominated as a judge and had adjudicated cases under the Sharia in a court set up by Taliban at Pythom, Guli Bagh.
The operation against absconding Taliban commanders had been announced jointly by the army and the defence committee in Swat’s Kabal tehsil.
“The army is determined to eliminate militancy from the Swat Valley. This is a time for brotherhood rather than conflict between us, the extremists have no other option other than to surrender,” Colonel Wahid Jan said to elders of the defence committee. “Welfare centres have been established for the orphans and the widows of the area where free services will be provided to them,” he added.
Ali Khan, the president of a defence committee in Kabal, said: “Restoration of peace is our joint responsibility, our defence committee will work with the army side by side and we are ready for every sacrifice in this regard.”
Appealing to the families of the absconded Taliban, he said, “Please surrender the absconding Taliban of your families so that you may not face any further trouble.”
