Heart attacks are responsible for one out of five deaths in the country. Some of these can be prevented by adopting a healthy life style.
Dr Naeem Aslam, a cardiologist, said this on Wednesday at a seminar titled “Healthy heart, healthy life” organised by the University of Agriculture’s (UAF) Public Relations and Publications Department (PRP) and the Senior Tutor’s Office.
UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan chaired the seminar.
Dr Aslam said that smoking, eating junk food, obesity, lack of physical activity, hypertension and diabetes increased the risk of heart attacks.
According to the World Health Organisation, as many as 16.6 million people died of heart attacks last year.
Dr Aslam said consuming fresh vegetables and fruits and avoiding junk food could help avert the risk greatly.
Every cigarette reduces the smoker’s life span by five minutes, he said. Smoking is responsible for 19 per cent of deaths by heart attacks, he added.
Dr Aslam said 18 per cent Paksitanis suffered from blood pressure related problems. He said hypertension doubled the risk of a heart attack. He also said one could avoid it by exercising. The risk is greater in women than it is in men, he said.
The vice chancellor said people must be made aware of what causes lifestyle diseases so they can take preventive measures.
All-out efforts must be made to educate people about these issues, he said, holding seminars on the subject was one such way.

High sugar level in blood is also bad for health and heart, so how can it be brought down. Someone managed to bring his blood sugar level down by taking a very small amount (about quarter teaspoonful) of Daarcheyney (Cinnamon) powder every day. At one time he had a very hard time in keeping blood sugar level at 7 (Fasting). Then since year and half ago he started taking a pinch of Maythee (Fenugreek) powder first thing in the morning with water and then a quarter teaspoonful of Daarcheyney (Cinnamon) powder with tea every day. Sometimes back his blood sugar level dropped to 7 (non fasting). His latest blood test has shown sugar lever at 5.3 (Fasting). Now he does not worry about eating a small amount of chocolate, sweet etc. He has stopped the unnecessary luxury of eating lunch since a few years ago. Eating dinner after breakfast and breakfast after dinner strikes a very good balance for the body. Perhaps one will agree. He has not been very keen on eating rice. If Maythee powder is not available then a few grains of Maythee can be chewed in the morning after leaving it overnight in some water in a cup. The water can also be drunk while chewing it. If Daarcheyney powder is not available then a little piece can be chewed and digested. Daarcheyney can also be taken with honey if available. Walking a minimum of two miles a day or more is also very helpful.
