Ever since her name was ‘leaked’ as a possible candidate, there is campaign in the media, by people of a certain mindset, against Ms Jahangir as if she was on the way to take oath of caretaker prime minister. Some columnists, analysts, evangelists clearly mention Ms Jahangir in their columns, writing about her stance on normalisation of relations with India and meeting with Bal Thackeray, linking it to Articles 62-63 of the Constitution, while some use the shield of the same articles to indirectly attack her.
First and foremost, the best way to get anyone out of a race is to declare him (or in this case, her) a strong contender for a position. This is exactly what has happened. While other names have also been taken, the way Ms Jahangir has been targeted reminds me of Habib Jalib’s couplet on the late Benazir Bhutto: “Dartay hayn bandooqon walay aik nihatti larkee say”. The ‘bandooq’ can be replaced with ‘qalam’ and ‘larkee’ can be replaced with ‘aurat’ in the case of Ms Jahangir.
While I have no comment on who should be the next caretaker prime minister, some of the remarks made against Ms Jahangir are enough to boil anyone’s blood. We have seen what happens when you target a certain personality: Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was a target of a continuous campaign that receded only with her assassination; Salmaan Taseer was targeted for months for his lifestyle, views on blasphemy law’s abuse, etc. and eventually, we saw him being killed in broad daylight.
In 2010, before Ms Jahangir was to contest the election for the position of the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, she was targeted with a smear campaign by a leading Urdu language daily. She was quoted out of context on Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, which was at that time, being amended under the Eighteenth Amendment, to malign her. Later on, a campaign was run against her in the same newspaper to reduce her chances of winning the elections. Her win against all odds was a victory for all those who have been targeted in such a manner. Whether she becomes caretaker prime minister or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is that most of the newspapers and their star journalists are acting more as opinion twisters than those who present facts. There has to be a fine line between your wish list and character assassination and sadly, when it comes to Ms Jahangir, it is deep character assassination which makes it all the more worrying for all of us cowards and diplomats in real life.

@RAW is WAR: Its interesting you've used the word "asset". Asset like what? An Indian asset may be? huh?
The democratic process in the country does not require a transitional central Govt..There are examples in countries of Europe who have the oldest democracies in the world, just follow the precedent most suitable for Pakistan.

I don't like her because she supported very corrupt elements of PPP and i think this is reason enough.
AJ, I salute you for your honesty, bravery, boldness and truth! PK would a much better place if we have few more women like her. Once again AJ we are very proud of you. May God bless & protect you.
@azhar: It is the EC who needs to be impartial. The interim PM simply needs to govern. He/She is not expected to address any issues raised with regards to corruption in polling. Once. This is understood people will realize that even the need for a caretaker PM is moot. As long as you don't think that Asma or whoever is selected as caretaker PM will not interfere with EC functioning, their personal political preferences are irrelevant.
AJ will expose IK even if came in to power for few days .that is why IK can't take the risk .........
AJ is bold and forthright but she is also a 'jiyala' and a PPP apologist and this was the reason she objected to by the PTI. Subsequently she was proven right when she started her diatribe her IK and PTI without any evidence to back herself up. As for the author, he is jiyala-in-a-suit so we should expect something like this from him
I think it takes a very naive person to defend AJ's impartiality. AJ has proved to be more than a "jiala" in recent years and exposed herself completely. she won the bar elections as a PPP candidate, if that's political impartiality than God bless all those who are supporting her. Its not about gender, lets grow out of these menial thoughts, Pakistan has given the first female PM to Asia. AJ is not suitable for the coveted post.
Unnecessary whining. While Asma Jahangir is my hero, there are people less controversial than her that can perform the duties of Caretaker PM. Lest we forget, the role of the caretaker PM isn't to make any major policy decisions, but too ensure free and fair elections. That's it. . . Hence her roles in protecting rights of minorities, stance against blasphemy law etc, are of no use. Only thing essential is political neutrality, which she doesn't have...regardless of how evil or how awful Imran Khan is.
@Falcon:
Very well said! Our liberals have indeed started playing this victim card left right and center. It was very unbecoming of AJ to make that allegation against PTI without being able to back it up with anything solid. The irony is that while our liberals regularly complain about the tendency of our people to believe in right wing conspiracy theories, they are themselves equally irresponsible in perpetuating their own set of conspiracy theories.
What we sadly like are balanced voices in the center.
@Falcon: **"But I have no qualms in saying that I have heard her more than few times coming across very biased in her remarks against IK and PTI, which is not proportionate to her stature"
She may have her bias. We all do. But does that mean she cannot be fair in her role as a caretaker PM? People with integrity can separate personal bias from professional duties.
Remember, her name is not being proposed as the EC whose job it is to ensure free and fair elections. Her only task is to ensure that a government is power does not use its power to favour the incumbent government. All that requires is basic competence and integrity. A lot of the heartburn stems from misunderstanding the different roles. Ofcourse as an outsider I don't even understand why a caretaker is needed in the first place. IF there are unfair practices that the incumbent government is trying to use, why can the EC not stop them.
In any case making her one meeting with Bal Thackeray appear to be an act of treason as some people are doing (not you) is absurd, as is the concern that she is pro-India. In fact even elected prime ministers do not have control over foreign policy - particularly when it comes to India, so how can a caretaker prime minister do that?
Author : "“Dartay hayn bandooqon walay aik nihatti larkee say”. The ‘bandooq’ can be replaced with ‘qalam’ and ‘larkee’ can be replaced with ‘aurat’ in the case of Ms Jahangir. "
Perhaps there is no need to replace 'bandooq' with 'qalam'. Maybe the bandooqo wale have activated the' qalams'
AJ has two main issues. She is a woman and she is liberal and secular. No wonder most rightwing leaders do not like her. In addition unlike the Taliban Khan, AJ never bowed down or cooperated with any dictator. Even though NS is not a liberal but he knows that AJ is honest and upfront which many in Paksitan cannot stand. As far as IK is concerned he never like a Pakistani woman in his life yet he wants to rule them!
I am beginning to notice that liberals are beginning to play victim card just like PPP. There is not even an iota of doubt that Asma Jehangir is an asset for the nation based on her services to humanity. But I have no qualms in saying that I have heard her more than few times coming across very biased in her remarks against IK and PTI, which is not proportionate to her stature. Isn't it funny that she openly admitted in an interview that she has no evidence that PTI is establishment backed but she would continue to say so just because some people out there think so? If our best intellectuals are so careless in their remarks that they can't substantiate their conspiracy theories, what to expect from others?
As a foreigner with no stakes in the game, firstly I find the whole idea of an interim government is against the very tenets of democracy which hinges on a peaceful transition from one government to another. . But given that Pakistan has a UNIQUE model with an interim government AND administrative structure (of Governors and God only knows who all), I can think of no one beyond reproach than Asma Jahangir. . Asma was nominated by PML-N (the main opposition) and Imran Khan having exactly ZERO MNAs should accede to her since he has no stake at this moment at all. His basis for deriding Asma is dubious and it displays an arrogance that whoever comes to power could do without.
Ms Jahangir is an asset Pakistan desperately needs.
